When Simple Math Trips Up Advanced AI The potential of large language models (LLMs) fascinates me, especially with Google's Gemini line reportedly outperforming OpenAI's GPT-4 in some benchmarks. Yet, I was surprised when a hypothetical "Gemini Advanced" model struggled with a basic download time calculation problem. The task: determine the download time with a given speed (x MB/s) and size (y GB). Even GPT-3.5 Turbo handled this, but the advanced LLM produced inaccurate results. This underscores some key points in AI: Context matters: LLMs can excel in language tasks but can be tripped up by problems requiring numerical reasoning. Understanding limits: "Advanced" doesn't mean infallible. It's crucial to identify where each model's strengths lie. AI ≠ Calculator: It's a reminder that LLMs aren't direct replacements for calculators or specialized tools.
