About us

Proudly brewed in India, Geist Brewing Co. is passionate about creating fresh, planet-friendly craft beer and curating authentic craft beer experiences. Founded in 2006 by schoolmates Narayan Manepally and Paul Chowdhary, Geist Brewing Co. is South India’s first distribution craft brewery. At the heart of its philosophy lies the belief that exceptional beer surpasses everything else. With a mission to ensure utmost freshness from the very first sip, the brand's journey began by experimenting with test batches in a small basement. Today, it operates a sprawling 10,000 sq. ft. factory where its experienced team brews a variety of international craft beer styles, including wheat beers, IPAs, stouts, lagers, and more. The first food & beverage location opened in October 2020 - Geist Brewing Co. OMR, a beer garden overlooking its distribution brewery on Old Madras Road, Bangalore. Today, Geist Brewing Co. has three distinct locations across Bangalore. The company has also expanded its B2B presence in Hyderabad and has made Geist Crowlers available across a growing number of retail outlets in Bangalore and Pondicherry. Follow @drinkgeist on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn for more information. Beerworks Restaurants and Microbrewery Pvt. Ltd. is the parent company behind Geist Brewing Co.

Meet Hrishikesh Das, affectionately known as Bappi by his colleagues at Geist Brewing Co. OMR. Originally from West Bengal, Bappi's journey to Bangalore began six years ago when he first joined the bustling restaurant scene, working alongside Chef Altaf Patel at The Smoke Co. When The Smoke Co. closed its doors in May 2019, Bappi returned to his village, uncertain of what the future held for him. But fate had other plans, and soon enough, a call from Chef Altaf brought him back to Bangalore, where a new chapter awaited at Geist Brewing Co. Hrishikesh started as a dedicated Housekeeping team member, and over the past four years, he has grown alongside the brand, witnessing its expansion from a single beer garden beside the Geist production brewery to three locations in the city. His responsibilities have evolved, and today, Hrishikesh leads the Housekeeping team, ensuring that every corner of the kitchen, restaurant, and bathroom is spotless and welcoming. He takes pride in mentoring his juniors, stepping in whenever necessary to guarantee that everything runs smoothly. For Hrishikesh, there’s no greater satisfaction than seeing a well-kept space and knowing that guests feel welcomed and respected. At Geist Brewing Co., Hrishikesh has found more than just a job—he’s found a place where his contributions are valued and where he can continue to grow. He often reflects on the joy of celebrating team outings, where laughter and camaraderie fill the air. It’s in these moments that Hrishikesh feels the strongest connection to his work and colleagues. In turn, Bappi's teammates tell us that his commitment to excellence, combined with his humble nature, make him a true pillar of the Geist team. Hrishikesh believes that guests should be treated like gods, and this belief drives him to ensure that every customer leaves with a smile. As Hrishikesh looks to the future, he hopes to continue contributing to Geist Brewing Co.’s success, proud of the role he plays in creating a welcoming atmosphere that keeps guests coming back. #DrinkGeist #BrewedinBangalore #ComeHomeToCraft #IndianCraftBeer #HumansofGeist #GeistBrewingCo #Bangalore #CraftBeer #TeamProfile #TeamFeature #Team

We’re thrilled to introduce our newest family members – a set of shiny fermenters that have just rolled in! These additions mark a significant step in our journey, allowing us to expand our brewing capacity and continue our commitment to crafting exceptional beers for Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pondicherry and beyond 🤞 Call us sentimental but we can’t help but think back to our little basement setup in the early 2000s where we first experimented with hops and dreams. These shiny additions are more than just equipment; they’re a testament to how far we’ve come together. Today, with the new fermenters, we’re ready to elevate our brewing process, explore innovative new beer-fuelled horizons, and continue perfecting the variants you love. This expansion isn’t just about adding capacity; it’s about enhancing our ability to serve our amazing community with the same passion and dedication that started it all ♥️ Thank you for being with us on this incredible journey - we’re looking forward to celebrating more moments like these 🍻 For now, it’s back to work for us on this beautiful Monday afternoon at the Geist Brewing Co. production brewery at Nimbekaipura. #drinkgeist #brewerylife #craftbeer #indiancraftbeer #bangalore #hyderabad #pondicherry #brewing

Meet Gururaj. P, the General Manager of Factory Operations at Geist Brewing Co. For 16 years, Gururaj worked at GlaxoSmithKline, navigating the complex world of pharmaceuticals. As a Senior Purchase Officer, he learned the intricacies of corporate operations and supply chain management. When GlaxoSmithKline relocated from Bangalore and Mysore, offering early retirement, it felt like the universe was nudging him towards a new path. Gururaj transitioned into a new industry by joining a company that was looking to set up a premium mineral water project inspired by Pune’s Mulshi Springs. It was during the research phase of this venture that he met Narayan and Siddhant from the Geist Brewing Co. team. At that time, our factory operations were in their infancy and needed someone experienced to helm the production brewery construction project from the ground up. Gururaj joined the team in 2016, excited by the challenge of creating something new. Setting up the production factory at Nimbekaipura was a journey filled with challenges and triumphs. Reminiscing about how the land then was filled with lush lemon and banana plantations, Gururaj recalls how the small team faced every hurdle with resilience in this journey to set up South India's first distribution craft brewery. By mid-2017, the team had their first production run, marking the start of something incredible. At Geist Brewing Co, Gururaj has seen the team transform from a small startup to a beloved name in India's craft beer landscape. For him, it’s a joy to hear people talk about the brand with affection, knowing that the beers have become part of people's celebrations and everyday moments. In today’s fast-paced world, job-hopping is common, but Gururaj is a shining example of someone who has always valued loyalty and commitment. His time at GlaxoSmithKline and now 8 years with Geist Brewing Co. have taught him the importance of staying the course. He finds that growing with a company, understanding its culture, and being part of its evolution is deeply fulfilling. As the General Manager of Factory Operations, Gururaj's role is dynamic and rewarding. He oversees everything from production schedules, to our fledgling veggie garden, to the meticulous care of our cold rooms, ensuring each keg of beer meets our high standards. While mentoring new team members, he shares his journey and the values of loyalty and persistence. "Looking back, I’m grateful for every twist and turn in my journey. Geist Brewing Co. has grown beyond our wildest dreams, and I’m excited about the future. Our goals are ambitious, but with our dedicated team, I know we’ll achieve them. To all our customers and supporters, thank you for being part of our story. Every pint of Geist craft beer is a testament to our hard work and passion. Here’s to many more years of shared success and great memories! 🍻" #ComeHomeToCraft #IndianCraftBeer #HumansofGeist #Bangalore

On 7th May 1988, the US Congress announced that it was officially #NationalHomebrewDay, honouring the passion and creativity of home brewers and their pivotal role in the resurgence and growth of the craft beer industry. Closer to home, Geist Brewing Co. shares a very special connection with homebrewing because that’s how our very own Narayan Manepally’s dream to build a beer business first emerged. As an engineer with Intel in the early 90s, Narayan moved to Portland, Oregon once the company expanded its offices. He discovered that a few of his colleagues brewed beer at home as a hobby. Soon, Narayan began visiting local craft breweries like McMenamins’ Cornelius Pass Roadhouse Brewery in Hillsboro, which is where he tried his first craft beer - their Hammerhead IPA. This kickstarted his interest in the different styles available beyond what he had encountered as a student in India. One Friday, Narayan and his colleague Jeff decided to buy some basic brewing equipment and brew their first beer. After some initial days of observation, the concoction was put in Narayan’s fridge & promptly forgotten until a few weeks later - Narayan got a call from Jeff saying a bunch of their friends were on their way over to try the beer! As back-up, Narayan went out to the store and bought a bunch of six-packs, convinced that the experiment would turn out to be disaster. But to his surprise, Narayan discovered that his first ever batch of home-brewed craft beer - a California Golden Ale - tasted delicious and looked even better! He was hooked. Over time, Narayan brought his passion for brewing back to India, believing that the country needed great-tasting beer. In 2006, he set up Geist Brewing Co. in Bangalore – and the rest is history! Unfortunately while all his pictures from his homebrew days got washed away in the heavy rains in Bangalore during 2004/5, here’s a photo representing Narayan’s passion for learning & experimentation - the corner stones of homebrewing culture. This one was taken during our collaboration brew with Stone Brewing at their Stone Brewing Liberty Station brewery in 2020. #homebrewing #craftbeer #beerhistory #beer #bangalore #portland #drinkgeist #comehometocraft

If you've visited Geist Brewing Co. OMR and been greeted by a charming smile and a hint of a Mumbai accent, chances are you've met Shilin Suresh our Trainee Executive extraordinaire! We caught up with him to have a chat on a sunny Bangalore afternoon. Hailing from Mumbai, Shilin's journey brought him to the city to pursue hotel management studies, where he discovered his passion for the service industry. Having joined the Geist Brewing Co. team as an Associate three years ago, his hard work and dedication quickly paid off as he rose through the ranks to become a Trainee Executive in F&B Service. Shilin finds himself drawn to the intricate workings of restaurant operations. He’s fascinated by how each piece fits together seamlessly, likening it to a well-oiled machine. But his true passion is building relationships with patrons who visit us at Geist Brewing Co. OMR. He takes a keen interest in each guest and takes pride in his ability to recall their individual preferences and tailor their experience accordingly. What fuels Shilin’s unwavering enthusiasm every day? He credits the unparalleled team camaraderie and the visionary leadership from the people around him. That’s not to forget the Beer Roast Chicken on our menu – something he swears by as a must try! While he does sometimes long for home, especially the vada pav that he swears is the real deal, he admits that Bangalore's pace and culture have allowed him to grow and find his motivation and passion for hospitality. A football fanatic and Lionel Messi admirer, Shilin’s Mondays are reserved for spirited football matches with his Geist colleagues at a nearby turf. He's also a self-professed foodie, always keen to explore Bangalore's buzzing culinary scene, keeping tabs on what’s new around town. As Shilin looks to the future, his aspirations are clear: to create memorable experiences at Geist that keep guests coming back. It’s this drive and genuine love for serving others that make him an invaluable part of the Geist team. #humansofgeist #geistbrewingco #drinkgeist #bangalore #craftbeer #teamprofile #teamfeature #team #hospitality #fnbservice

Last week, we dropped in here to tell you about our Geist Brewing Co. Hennur team’s efforts to begin an inclusive discussion around food waste, sustainability and accountability. Here’s the next update! Over the course of a few weeks in June 2023, Elizabeth helped us experiment with a food waste monitoring solution for commercial kitchens by Light Blue Consulting (@lightblueconsulting). This tool helped us classify kitchen waste into various categories, allowing us to keep track of our progress in reducing waste. We spent a couple of weeks regularly analysing and measuring our waste to identify areas where we could enhance and optimise our resources. More importantly, this step helped promote a line of thinking around accountability and responsible resource management amongst our team members, some of whom went on to participate in a series of workshops with Elizabeth. Throughout these sessions, we shared ideas and brainstormed various ways to give new life to ingredients that would otherwise be discarded. The workshops were educative, as they inspired us to come up with innovative ideas such as drying pineapple rinds for cocktail garnish powders, upcyling coffee grinds, discussing watermelon rind dosa and making oil from herb roots. One of the most endearing parts of these workshops was the delight our team members took in sharing homegrown techniques and recipes, often passed down to them by family members over generations. At the end of the day, many of the ways in which we #ComeHomeToCraft and implement innovative ways of thinking about sustainability, waste management and reuse are often already part of our daily lives. We just need to look at them through the right lens 🌍✨ #Sustainability #FoodWasteManagement #GeistBrewingCo #ReuseKitchenWaste #Community #Innovation #Creativity 🌿 #SustainableEating #DrinkGeist #CircularEconomy

What's cooking in our kitchen? Aside from the obvious, we're also routinely thinking of ways to turn ‘waste’ into wonder, one recipe at a time! Since Day 0 at Geist Brewing Co., we’ve been designing systems to incorporate long-term sustainability and innovation practices in our efforts to craft fresh, high-quality beer. Over the last few years, we’ve been experimenting with ways in which we can carry this commitment even to our kitchens. In all honesty, we've come to terms with this being a continuous learning process with no instant solutions or quick fixes. Step 1 in this process was to begin building a relevant mindset amongst all team members - from leadership, front-of-the house, brand marketing and housekeeping to those behind the bar in the kitchen. When it comes to finding innovative ways to repurpose kitchen waste, there are some things we want to steer clear of: 👎 complex jargon & convoluted concepts that can alienate or exclude those on the team who may bring truly valuable inputs - too often, conversations around sustainability and food waste are limited to boardrooms 👎 the thinking that only changes at a certain scale are impactful 👎 tying these conversations to lofty goals and action items that look good on paper or slides but in reality can sometimes bring in a mentality of ‘top-down forced change’ for our team members To kick-start our efforts, we reached out to our friend Elizabeth Yorke - a chef turned food researcher, writer and an advocate for sustainable food systems. She is the co-founder of Edible Issues, a collective that is designing experiences and fostering thought and conversation on the Indian Food System, and the founder of Saving Grains, an upcycling food initiative inspired by the historically circular relationship between brewers and bakers. Stay tuned for our next post on what steps our team members at Geist Brewing Co. Hennur took to begin an inclusive discussion around food waste, sustainability and accountability 🌍✨ #ComeHomeToCraft #Sustainability #FoodWasteManagement #GeistBrewingCo #ReuseKitchenWaste #Community #Innovation #Creativity 🌿 #SustainableEating #DrinkGeist #CircularEconomy
