Empowering young people, creating brighter futures.
About us
Founded in 2000, EMpower—The Emerging Markets Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that partners with local organisations in emerging market countries, and other change-makers, to enable marginalised young people to transform their lives and communities. We support local organisations in emerging market countries that provide youth with the tools, skills, and resources they need to lead healthy, productive lives. What Makes EMpower Unique? -Concentration on emerging market countries, where communities are many times marginalised and left out of economic booms. -Focus on young people during a critical time of transition and the three key building blocks for their future: education, health, and livelihoods. -Open dialogue: EMpower engages donors in decisions about grants and forms trusting conversations with grantee partners about the issues they face and their solutions. -Streamlined, transparent, and highly cost-effective grantmaking model: 100% of funds raised from individuals goes directly to our grantee partners. -Multifaceted and long-term support: we don't just provide financial resources to our grantees, but partnership, networking, and learning opportunities.

On Thursday, EMpower gathered 70 mission-driven young professionals for our Next Gen Cocktail Party in New York! It was inspiring to see a room filled with passionate individuals, each eager to support our mission of empowering marginalised youth in emerging markets. Our dedicated Next Gen Co-Chairs, Joana Barros-Magalhães and Daniel Stewart, along with Board Director Rekha Nair, shared their commitment to EMpower’s mission and the value of our Next Gen Council—a vibrant community of young leaders amplifying our impact. This event celebrated collective inspiration and meaningful change, made possible by our Next Gen Council members: Cole Bond, Jason Kong, Júlia Lino Oliveira, Monia Bianco, Winnie Tang, Catalina Sanchez-Carrion, and Merve Pekdemir. With the energy, ideas, and networks of our Next Gen members, we continue to expand our impact globally. It’s through events like this, and the support of compassionate leaders, that we empower young people not just to dream, but to shape their own futures. Thank you to everyone who joined, participated, and made this event memorable! If you’re inspired to join the Next Gen community, please reach out to Deanna Tuttle, our Development and Operation Associate.

Yesterday, we were honoured to join Citi’s #eforeducation event in Johannesburg, focused on empowering young people. The event welcomed 50 students who had the chance to explore the banking and finance sector through insightful presentations from Citi and its partners, covering career paths, essential skills, and fields of study for success. 🎓 Anusha Naicker, our Regional Programme Director for Africa, shared EMpower’s focus areas and celebrated Citi’s support, highlighting the critical role of mental health in both personal and professional success. Our South Africa Fellows also connected with students, sharing relatable stories from their own university and early career experiences. It was a truly rewarding day being part of this initiative with Citi as we worked together to equip young people with knowledge to help them plan their careers, explore their options, and prioritise mental health along the way. 🍀 🧠 Here are some glimpses from the event! 👇 For more information on partnering with EMpower, reach out to Zaryna Lee, our Corporate Partnerships Development Manager, UK or click here: https://lnkd.in/gtjtyxmZ #PartnershipsforImpact

Helping mission-driven organizations become more strategically effective in their business development, team leadership, communications, partnerships, and operations.
We have to talk about down there (Hay que hablar de ahí abajo) ❕👇 Why are so many of us afraid to speak openly about sex? The consequences of silence can be severe, but speaking openly can ignite change. Poderosas Colombia, a grantee partner of EMpower—The Emerging Markets Foundation led by the fearless Mariana Sanz de Santamaría Franco, is breaking the silence around sexual health in Colombia. The impact so far? 💠 16,000+ youth received sexual education 💠 343 future leaders trained 💠 Programs in 22 communities across 8 Colombian departments EMpower is proud to fuel this change through our partnership with Poderosas. We provide long-term, flexible funding, allowing Poderosas to adapt and respond to the evolving needs of the communities they serve. Additionally, we offer capacity-building support that's strengthening their organizational infrastructure and empowering their staff. EMpower's comprehensive approach has enabled Poderosas to grow their reach significantly, including expanding their work to the city of Cali. Thank you to Mariana for presenting today at our Global Staff Meeting to challenge us to confront the impact of silence around critical issues. ❔ What issues are you not talking about, and why? ❔ Join the movement!
