Fruit Flies: The Powerhouse of Biomedical Research in Africa In the bustling city of Ibadan, Nigeria, a biochemist named Amos Abolaji has established a miniature fruit fly laboratory in his office. This unassuming setup is part of a growing movement to harness the power of Drosophila melanogaster, the common fruit fly, to advance biomedical research across the African continent. The fruit fly has long been a workhorse in the world of genetics and developmental biology, with its short life cycle and well-understood genome making it an ideal model organism. But in Africa, where resources are often limited, the fruit fly offers a unique advantage over traditional laboratory rodents. The fly has a high degree of advantages compared with rodents, especially in resource-limited regions, Abolaji explains. They're cheap, easy to raise, require little lab space and can bring fast results. This sentiment is echoed by Rashidatu Abdulazeez, a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria who has also embraced the fruit fly as a research tool. I desire to carry out research that will have beneficial effects on humans, she says. Abdulazeez's journey with the fruit fly began with a challenge: she had to catch the flies herself, as she didn't have access to a pre-established colony. After some trial and error, she succeeded, and went on to publish an analysis of the genetic variation of Nigeria's D. melanogaster populations. This accessibility has allowed the fruit fly to take root across the continent, with workshops and collaborations organized by initiatives like DrosAfrica playing a crucial role in spreading knowledge and expertise. In 2017, Abolaji and DrosAfrica hosted a workshop at the University of Ibadan that brought in experienced fruit fly researchers from around the world to teach attendees about the various applications of Drosophila in research. As the use of fruit flies in African research continues to grow, the benefits are becoming increasingly clear. Not only do these tiny insects hold the potential to address pressing public health concerns, but they also provide a pathway for local scientists to connect with the global research community and build their own research capabilities. In the words of Abdulazeez, Small Lab Big Science – a sentiment that captures the outsized impact the humble fruit fly can have on the future of biomedical research in Africa.

It's amazing to see how trends in the Indian market have mirrored trends in conservation in the country. Visualization of such instances from the perspective of an ecologist makes my brain tingle. With the Indian Cheetah Reintroduction Project failing as bad as Demonetization or The Indian Vultures disappearing with homegrown brands, coincidental or not, it fascinates me to compare the perceptions of these anomalies. Compare the uproar of the discomfort towards Demonetization to the loss of cheetahs and utter failure of the project, all in all, or the congruence between the near extinction status of the Great Indian Bustard to India's new found stature in the global economy. Scratching on to my absurdist tendencies and looking into these similarities has been a fun thing to do. Well, on that note, here goes the new blog I wrote for ENTECH - Explore Your Passion https://lnkd.in/d6PG-uWE
