💡 For India to meet its ambitious growth targets, ecommerce exports must be made simpler and more cost-effective for Indian MSMEs. Our report with #NITIAayog, Boosting Exports from MSMEs, contains important recommendations for regulatory changes that would help boost ecommerce exports. These include allowing more time for payment realisation and repatriation - currently, a seller is mandated to receive export proceeds within nine months of the export shipment - and redefining the responsibility of the seller and the ecommerce operator - sellers shouldn't have to participate in every stage of the complex export and payment processes. 💡 Cotton sowing is down to 11.24 million hectares, raising alarms about India's textile export goals. The decline in production affects the ability to meet the $40 billion export target by FY25. “This risk is increased by the fact that import of cotton fibre attracts 10% duty. This can substantially affect India’s export competitiveness by increasing the raw material price throughout the value chain," says Mihir Parekh, Associate Partner, Garments, Foundation For Economic Development. 💡 The Union Budget 2024 talked about incentives for manufacturing, but was silent on reforms. Manufacturing in India faces multiple challenges such as restrictive labour laws, inefficient land utilisation, and stringent environment regulation. Special Economic Zones (SEZs), such as the one in Shenzhen, China, are an important solution for revitalising Indian manufacturing. But are Indian SEZs up to the mark? "India’s 280 operational SEZs account for $163 Bn in exports, approximately 60% of which are service exports, and provide employment to 3 Mn people. By comparison, Shenzhen alone generates twice the export value and four times the employment."
