About us
FWWB was promoted in 1981, as an affiliate of Women’s World Banking, a global network created to focus on the need for women’s direct access to financial services and recognizing women’s role in building a nation’s economy. At the core of the vision behind FWWB’s creation are millions of women from low income households, who do not have access to any financial services. We attempt to harness the collective power of these women by supporting self-help groups, federations, co-operatives, and farmer producer companies. We believe in the bankability and credit-worthiness of women, knowing that economic empowerment is crucial to fight injustices of all kinds. However, we are not a lending agency. As a facilitator of access to financial services, we catalyse the formation of a credit history by becoming the first lenders. A big part of this process also includes building capacities of the women we work with. We enable them to overcome barriers of gender, poverty, and lack of access to knowledge in the path of lifting themselves out of poverty. Our experience of over two decades shows that the combination of loan support, capacity-building and collective action is one that yields rewards, creating a positive and lasting impact on the lives of the women we work with. We provide loans and capacity building support in the following four areas: agriculture finance, solar energy, financial education and women entrepreneurship support, and water and sanitation. Cumulatively, we have reached out to more than 1 million women across India through our interventions.

Here’s another story of a farming couple Anil Daula Mule and Sunita Anil Mule, from Kinhola village in Aurangabad, transformed their traditional dairy farm into a thriving business with smart investments and sustainable practices. Selling milk and milk-based products has generated an additional source of livelihood. They started selling raw milk with 4 HF cows and 12 acres. They invested in a boiler and refrigerator to process milk into Khoya and sweets, partnering with local sweet shops to boost earnings. On high-yield days, they produced up to 18 kg of Khoya, selling it for ₹260 per kg. They innovatively used solar energy for milking, cow dung as fertilizer, silage bags for feeding, and converted wastewater for their kitchen garden: unique packaging extended shelf life and reduced waste. They created job opportunities for women by involving the whole family and boosting household income. Their journey highlights resilience and creativity in transforming challenges into opportunities. In India, agriculture is not just an economic backbone; it's a way of life for millions. The gender data gap in Indian agriculture highlights significant inequalities, particularly concerning women's roles and land ownership. Over 60% of the agricultural workforce comprises women, and around 85% of rural women actively engage in farming; only 2% inherit agrarian land. This disparity limits access to loans and financial resources, rendering their contributions largely invisible. Accurate data on gender inequality is crucial for measuring progress in women's economic empowerment and addressing their unique needs in agriculture. FWWB has implemented various initiatives to combat these challenges, such as empowering women with digital skills, educating rural communities, and utilizing gender-focused data collection methods. These efforts strive to enhance resilience and economic empowerment in rural communities by recognizing women's contributions and fostering equitable access to resources.
