ClassNK - Nippon Kaiji Kyokai has classed the ammonia-fueled #tugboat ‘Sakigake’ completed by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) and IHI Power Systems Co.,Ltd. as an #ammonia-fueled vessel. This is the world’s first ammonia-fueled vessel for commercial use (as of August 23, 2024, according to research by NYK). The NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha will employ the vessel in tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay over a three-month demonstration period.  This vessel was a Green Innovation Fund Project*2 initiated in October 2021 under #Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to develop vessels equipped with domestically produced ammonia-fueled engines. ClassNK is involved in the vessel safety assessment as a partner organization for this project. The predecessor, the LNG-fueled tugboat of the same name, was completed in August 2015 as the first LNG-fueled vessel in Japan. After eight years of tug service in Tokyo Bay, the vessel was docked at the NYK Group’s Keihin Dock Co. Ltd. for conversion to an ammonia-fueled vessel. The main engine, etc., were replaced with ammonia-fueled ones, and sea trials were conducted using ammonia as fuel.  As part of the ‘ClassNK Transition Support Services’ that comprehensively supports our customers’ smooth transition to zero-emission, ClassNK will continue to support the introduction of alternative-fueled vessels through contributions such as issuance of safety requirements and guidance for design, and safety assessment.

To bolster agricultural productivity and boost rural income, #UttarPradesh is targetting to double #maize production by 2027. The goal is to elevate maize output to 2.73 million tonnes (MT) by expanding both the #cultivation area and the yield per hectare. Swiss marine power company WinGD Ltd. has teamed up with global shipping line CMA CGM to test its Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) technology for dual-fuel engines onboard one of CMA CGM’s vessels. The #collaboration marks the first field test for the new dual-fuel engine technology and follows successful factory tests showing significant efficiency improvements with both #diesel and #LNG fuel. Shipping giant A.P. Moller - Maersk(Maersk) unveiled its third large #dualfuel vessel in its fleet, capable of sailing on #greenmethanol. The name Antonia Maersk was unveiled at a ceremony held in Aarhus, #Denmark. Antonia Maersk was christened by its godmother Kirsten Andersen, spouse of Vestas CEO Henrik Andersen. The ship is named after Antonia Uggla, granddaughter of Ane Maersk Mc-Kinney Uggla, the chair of A.P. Møller Fonden and its investment company A.P. Moller Holding, the majority owner of A.P. #HongKong has taken a step toward more sustainable #maritime #transportation with the delivery of the region’s first carbon fibre hybrid high-speed passenger ship. The delivery of the New Pearl 6 took place in a ceremony that was held on 8 August in Guangzhou. Built with advanced carbon fibre materials, the ship offers benefits such as reduced weight, corrosion resistance, and low noise levels. It has a capacity of 500 passengers and incorporates new materials, energy sources, and hybrid propulsion technology. Lobby group, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), has rebooted a #greenhousegas (GHG) levy scheme it has been touting for a number of years. The reworked proposal, pitched in #partnership with the #Bahamas and #Liberia, is a rewards programme to incentivise accelerated production and uptake of zero/near-zero GHG #marinefuels, plus a separate IMO fund to be allocated billions of dollars annually to support #maritime GHG reduction efforts in developing countries.
