Delayed payments continue to plague India’s MSMEs, impacting their cash flow and financial stability. In collaboration with FISME, GAME has been actively working on addressing this issue through a series of roundtables across the country, bringing voices from the ground to the forefront. So how can timely payments to MSMEs be made the norm and what can MSMEs do to be better prepared in these changing times? Ramesh Dharmaji, Senior Advisor at GAME, and Anil Bharadwaj, Secretary General at FISME, explore potential answers to these questions. Watch the full interview as they dive into the key insights from our recent Delayed Payments roundtables in a conversation with Zee Business' editor Saurabh Manchanda. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dyXEZY78 Stay tuned for the upcoming Delayed Payments 3.0 report to get the complete insights as we chart the way towards a credit-inclusive future for MSMEs in India. Delayed payments to MSMEs should not be "just the cost of doing business". For MSMEs to grow and thrive, they should have the capital required. And this much-needed growth won't happen if MSMEs' working capital is tied up in payments that are due to them but aren't released on time by their customers. #MSMEs #DelayedPayments #NotTheCostOfDoingBusiness #MassEntrepreneurship
Over the last few years, GAME - Global Alliance for Mass Entrepreneurship and our alliance partners, including the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India, have been addressing one of the most persistent issues faced by small businesses — delayed payments. Our first report in May 2022 estimated that ₹10.7 lakh crore, or 5.9% of the gross value added (GVA) of Indian businesses, was locked up annually as delayed payments from buyers to MSME suppliers. A vast majority (~80%) of the annual delayed payments amount was owed to Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs). Fundamentally, payments are delayed because of a power asymmetry between smaller suppliers and large buyers. Recently, the Ministry of MSME, GAME and Fisme India conducted a series of regional and national roundtable discussions. These discussions brought together government officials, MSMEs, and industry experts to focus on timely payments and explore solutions for smoother access to credit for MSMEs. What used to be seen as an inevitable “just the cost of doing business” for MSMEs while working with larger enterprises is now being openly questioned and addressed. This has made me realise how important it is to call attention to normalised bad behaviours. MSMEs are also realising and asserting their right to be paid by the date that their payments are due. Until recently, behaviours like racial discrimination were often dismissed as unfortunate but routine, something people quietly accepted. These behaviours or actions were seen as “just the way things are” and were rarely challenged. However, movements like #BlackLivesMatter broke the silence, forcing people to confront these issues and recognise them for what they are: unacceptable. It’s encouraging to see how proactive the Government of India has been in supporting our efforts to address the delayed payments issue. #DelayedPayments #MSMEs #MassEntrepreneurship

Last month, Airblack hosted its largest-ever graduating batch at the India Habitat Center, with over 800+ women graduating as certified makeup artists in over 300 cities - making it one of the largest skilling graduations in India. We were joined by Shraddha Naik, the renowned Celebrity Makeup Artist behind the glorious on-screen looks for Shraddha Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and many more. In its 4th year of operations, Airblack has become a leading skilling academy in the beauty space, with over 35,000 alumni. We now conduct one graduation batch every quarter. All the grind seems worth it when we see the work of our lives transpire into real impact in the lives of thousands of people. More than 50% of these women have already started earning, and others are in the process of setting up their home parlors or freelancing services. Kudos to the Airblack team for pulling this off, and to our partners such as the Beauty & Wellness Sector Skill Council & GAME - Global Alliance for Mass Entrepreneurship for supporting. We are just getting started! Vaibhav Raj Gupta Kavya Tandon Ved Mani Tiwari Monica Bahl Atul Kumar Tiwari

Surekha Balaji Sutar from Latur, Maharashtra, started her journey with a small papad-making business. Through the WEFEP program, in partnership with NRLM and GAME, she received a ₹4,50,000 loan from the State Bank of India under the PMFME scheme. Presented by President Smt. Droupadi Murmu, the loan helped Surekha expand her business into chilli grinding, wheat noodles, and more. With a remarkable ROI of 12.4%, Surekha’s business now generates employment opportunities for SHG members in her district. Her success is a powerful testament to how women entrepreneurs can transform their communities with the right support. Recently, Ketul Acharya and Ramesh Dharmaji from GAME had the privilege of meeting with Shri Alok Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary, MSME and Export Promotion, Government of Uttar Pradesh to explore innovative pathways for fostering mass entrepreneurship in the region. During the insightful discussion, Shri Alok Kumar shared the state’s ambitious vision for driving the growth of MSMEs. They delved into a variety of initiatives, including revitalising traditional clusters, promoting new-age industries, and the promising Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyam Vikas Abhiyan Yojana, launched on August 15, 2024. The conversation was rich with ideas, focusing on collaboration with District Industry Centres (DICs) to promote enterprise, identifying emerging sectors, and partnering with banks to create a robust network of credit counsellors.
