Climate Co-Benefits for Climate Action 🌳 Have you ever heard of #ClimateCoBenefits? The term refers to unintended climate benefits of a policy or action. Some policies or actions do not have the primary objective of mitigating or adapting to #ClimateChange but their implementation still has significant climate mitigation or adaptation impacts. Adopting climate co-benefits methodologies can help Indian Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) to quantify and measure the specific impacts of their climate initiatives. To institutionalise these methodologies in PSEs, we are partnering with SCOPE (Standing Conference of Public Enterprises), Oxford Policy Management, the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and the Perspectives Climate Group to organise a workshop series targeted at Indian #PSEs. Our recent regional workshop in #Kolkata explored the potential of developing climate co-benefits methodologies for #CircularEconomy and #forestry programmes to strengthen #ClimateAction by PSEs. 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: 💡 Explored critical topics and indicators of climate co-benefits for PSEs, which were illustrated using best practice examples from selected companies. 💡 Climate co-benefits methodologies for urban forestry and India’s single-use plastics (SUPs) ban are being co-created with identified states and interested companies. 💡 Insightful discussions with leading experts on our Draft Assessment Framework to measure and account climate co-benefits in the focus areas took place. Key parameters to pilot the methodology are effectiveness, data availability and the scope of its on-ground implementation. A climate co-benefits approach is beneficial to identify climate mitigation and adaptation impacts in sustainable development policies and programmes that do not have a primary climate focus. Together with our partners, we co-create innovative approaches for #ClimateAction, which is also a priority area of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP) between #India and #Germany. 🎥 You missed the first regional workshop? 🚴Sustainable mobility has shaped his professional life: the topic has played a central role for Daniel Ernesto Moser since his studies. He is now working for GIZ India, in a country of 1.4 billion people and many innovative ideas. ♀️His focus is not only on green mobility, but also on gender equitable mobility. Women and girls in India have fewer opportunities to get from A to B safely. Daniel Moser and his team are therefore looking for ways to promote participation for all. Optimising Electric Bus Operations in India ⚙️ 🛠️ India’s public transport ecosystem is rapidly transitioning from conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) buses to Electric Buses. With an aim to achieve the net-zero targets by 2070, the country’s aspiration to decarbonise the public bus transport has scaled up. 🌏 With over 8,000 e-buses already in operation nationwide and thousands more in the pipeline through the FAME scheme, transit agencies face considerable challenges in planning and managing their deployment. Introducing electric buses also brings unique technological and operational hurdles. ⚡ 🚍 GIZ India, in collaboration with Surat Municipal Corporation, Surat Sitilink, Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) and WRI India, has launched the beta version of a web-based “E-Bus Integrated Planning and Scheduling Tool for Surat” at the #ConnectKaro2024 annual event. This event featured a session titled “Electrifying Urban Buses: Deep Dive into Electric Bus Planning and Optimisation,”. The tool’s features, capabilities, and real-world applications were demonstrated during this session. 💡 🔧 Tool Overview: The tool focuses on analysing and optimising the operation and cost-effectiveness of the electric bus systems. It is designed to improve transit agencies’ e-bus route planning and scheduling while enhancing the user’s travel experience. The tool assesses the viability of e-bus operations for specific bus models and schedules while optimising charging schedules. Key launches 🚀 🔄 Tool Modules: The tool is developed across three major modules: 1. Dead kilometres optimisation module 2. Bus scheduling and charging schedule module 3. Total cost estimation module 🎥 Tool video: A video demonstration of the support that the tool provides to multiple stakeholders for efficient e-bus city operations can be found here: https://bit.ly/3zpVohp The launch was followed by an enriching panel discussion on “Optimising Public Transport – Overcoming Deployment and Operational Challenges.” Through our collaborative efforts in delivering decarbonised mobility solutions, we contribute to the promotion of #GreenMobility, a key focus area of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP) between #India and #Germany. Unlocking Wetland Potential: Realising Climate Co-Benefits 🌍 Wetlands are critical for global biodiversity, water and food security. In addition to their ecological value, they provide invaluable climate co-benefits such as carbon sequestration and resilience to extreme weather events when managed effectively. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨-𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬? In the context of wetlands, climate co-benefits refer to the additional positive outcomes of wetland conservation and restoration efforts which contribute to both environmental health and climate change mitigation. To better understand and measure these benefits, we joined hands with Wetlands International South Asia (WISA), the Perspectives Climate Group, and the Institute of Economic Growth. Together, we developed a new methodology to assess the climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) co-benefits of wetland management. The tool has been piloted in a range of wetland types, from high altitude to coastal areas, floodplains and urban areas. It was launched in August this year during a stakeholder workshop. 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 🔧 Highlighted the tool’s user-friendly design 📊 Stressed the importance of comprehensive data and capacity-building for effective implementation 🇮🇳 Discussed the tool’s potential to advance India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and to support national programmes like the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA), Amrit Dharohar, the Green Credit Programme and MISHTI 💰 Explored opportunities for unlocking new climate finance 🗣️ Collected stakeholder feedback on effectiveness and areas for improvement The tool will help to assess and quantify climate co-benefits, highlighting the indirect benefits of effective wetland management. Our joint efforts contribute to the conservation of India’s rich #biodiversity, improved natural resource management and stronger #ClimateAction, which are priority areas of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between #India and #Germany.
