“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”, this quote by Napoleon Hill accurately mirrors what the students from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Design/Build Studio, Chicago, USA, have achieved in their initiative by designing and building a sewing pavilion located at Chandewadi, Mangaon district, which is about 139km from Mumbai, India. From envisioning and designing the entire project, to building it themselves from scratch, the students aspired to empower the community and enrich the lives of the citizens residing there through functional architecture and well-designed facility, which can offer significant possibility for economic independence. With an opportunity so unique and socially beneficial for our community, GWS was pleased to have collaborated for this initiative. We did all that we could to support the international students. Witnessing the zeal and rigour of all the students towards their work during this stint, has reinforced our teams to be further motivated to contribute even more towards our work and society at large. We would like to specially thank Professor Frank Flurry, Mr. Owen Kane and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Design/Build Studio for considering India and GWS for this initiative. We look forward to more such adventures! #gws #IIT #socialresponsibility #façade

Similar to any other product manufacturing process, glass also faces several bottlenecks & hurdles that require all manufacturers to be extra cautious about certain aspects with respect to the process. In today’s point of discussion for GWS Pathshala session, let us elaborate on two such bottlenecks which are critical factors that influence the quality & performance of tempered glass, they are namely; 1) Roller Wave Distortion (RWD): The heat treatment process can cause the glass to bow and warp, that can be viewed as subtle waves or optical distortion of reflected images once the glass cools down & hardens. 2) Edge Lift (EL): It refers to the curvature of the glass edges, either upwards or downwards. Identification: One common method is to visually inspect the glass for any signs of waviness or unevenness. A roller wave gauge is designed to measure the extent of EL & RWD in processed glass. Additionally, automated optical inspection consists of advanced systems that use cameras & software to detect & quantify these distortions. Causes: -Glass Width: Reduced glass rigidity is more susceptible to sagging under its own weight. -Roller Diameter: Smaller diameter rollers can concentrate pressure, leading to more pronounced wave formation. -Uneven Pressure: Imbalance in pressure from rollers during tempering can cause the edges to be pushed up or down. -Improper Heating/Cooling Profiles: This can influence pressure distribution & potentially worsen the issue. Effects/Impact: -Functional Issues: EL can affect proper installation or performance. For example, during installation process glass with significant edge lift might not sit perfectly against a frame, creating uneven gaps & potentially compromising structural integrity. -Visual Distortion: The wave pattern tends to disrupt light transmission that impacts clarity. -Aesthetics: The wavy reflection on the glass takes away the visual appeal. Plausible Solutions Towards Mitigation: -Assimilation & Optimization of Roller Settings: One effective way to fix glass RWD is to adjust the settings on the glass manufacturing equipment by fine-tuning the duration, pressure, speed & temperature of the rollers thereby minimizing distortion & achieving a smoother finish. -Machine Maintenance: Regular inspection & replacement of worn rollers is crucial for maintaining optimal roller performance. -Glass Selection: The choice of glass is a great influence in this aspect, glass with a higher softening point can be beneficial for critical applications which can help relieve any internal stresses that may be causing distortion. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe once said, "God is in the details", this quote resonates with our company’s perspective of how we as suppliers of architectural façade products, always strive towards achieving & further exceeding expected levels of perfection in the miniscule details to ensure that such factors do not compromise the functionality & aesthetic value of any building.
