Received this heartwarming message from my intern/mentee who worked with us in the Month of May. It helped me introspect on who really is a Guru and why are we so inclined to some of these Gurus in our lives! There is a saying in Sanskrit (source unknown) prerakaḥ sūcakaśvaiva vācako darśakastathā| śikṣako bodhakaścaiva ṣaḍete guravaḥ smṛtāḥ|| This verse describes the six types of Gurus (teachers) that are traditionally recognized: 1. Prerakaḥ: The inspirer or motivator. 2. Sūcakaḥ: The indicator or pointer (who guides in a particular direction). 3. Ācākaḥ: The one who explains or elucidates. 4. Darśakaḥ: The demonstrator (who leads by example). 5. Śikṣaka: The instructor or educator. 6. Bodhakaḥ: The enlightener or illuminator. These six types collectively constitute what is considered as a 'guru' or teacher in traditional wisdom. Each type of guru plays a specific role in the process of teaching and learning, emphasizing different aspects such as motivation, guidance, explanation, demonstration, instruction, and enlightenment which helps shapes our personality. I’m really grateful and thankful to have experienced wonderful teachers at different stages of my life and still continue to have Gurus who inspire and mould me. My Late father Harikrishna Holla has been my biggest Guru and what stays with me is that he said “Always impart knowledge unconditionally, it only expands your own learning”.
