ICRIER releases the India Jobs and Occupation Tracker! The objective of India Jobs and Occupation Tracker (I-JOT) – a quarterly publication from ICRIER – is to make labour market data as easily accessible and comprehensible as GDP statistics. The first issue, drawing on the data from the Periodic labour Force Survey (PLFS), offers an in-depth analysis of India’s urban labour market trends for Q2:2024. Key findings include: ☑ Resilient Labour Market: India’s urban labour market remains strong, despite a cyclical slowdown in Q2 2024 due to election-related uncertainty (see below table). ☑ Growing Feminisation: More women are joining the urban workforce, taking on diverse occupational roles; however, a significant gender gap remains. ☑Widespread Regional Improvements: Most states and Union Territories report higher participation and employment ratios and lower unemployment rate. ☑Lack of Structural Transformation: Decline in the share of industrial employment and a rise in share of agricultural employment within urban areas, indicate limited structural transformation of the economy. ☑Need for High-Skill Jobs: While adequate jobs are being created, these are mostly low-and medium-skilled jobs: one out of six urban male worker is a salesperson, one out of 12 is a driver, and only one out of 50 is an ICT professional. The is an urgency to create more higher skill employment opportunities to better utilise the available talent. The report concludes that while India’s labour market is robust and expanding, the lack of structural transformation and limited growth in high-skill jobs pose challenges to sustainable economic progress. What does Trump’s return mean for India-US trade? Our latest op-ed by Arpita Mukherjee and Aahana Srishti talks about how his past policies on tariffs, visas, and trade barriers left India’s exporters, and tech industry on edge—but there’s room for optimism too! With the US looking to reduce its reliance on China, India has a real chance to step up as a major player in American supply chains. The article also explores the potential ups and downs: Could healthcare, renewable energy, and agro-processing be growth sectors? Will changes in immigration affect our tech talent? Dive in to find out what’s next for this crucial partnership, and why smart collaboration could be the key to mutual success: https://lnkd.in/gMR5u7Sk #IndiaUSTrade #NewBeginnings #TradeOpportunities #Trump2024 #GlobalEconomy #IndiaUSRelations

“Among the countries with highest number of undernourished people, India has the highest (194.6 million) followed by Pakistan (48.8 million) and Nigeria (39.4 million). In Africa, 298.4 million people faced hunger in 2023 (State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, 2023). Hence, Asia, especially South Asia, and Africa, ought to be the focal points for those committed to abolish hunger from this planet. Harmonizing agriculture, health policies and social safety nets are vital to advance from food security to nutrition, as India works towards achieving the SDGs by 2030,” says Sulakshana Rao, senior fellow and distinguished professor, #Ashok #Gulati, ICRIER in #Beyond #Hunger: #Advancing from #Food #Security to #Nutrition #Security in the latest #AF-#TAB issue. #foodsecurity #nutritionsecurity #prevalenceofundernourishment https://lnkd.in/gYAf8chh

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Bibek Debroy, Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, and a cherished economist. We have fond memories of Prof. Debroy. He was associated with us as a faculty member and later, frequently participated in our conferences and events, leaving an indelible mark on everyone with his sharp intellect, versatility, and candid perspectives. To us, he was part of the ICRIER family—an inspiring figure known for his out-of-the-box thinking, wit, and his ability to speak his mind and share valuable insights. This is a profound loss for all of us, and we pray that he rests in peace.

Will COP29 make a difference? Going by the past experience, the answer is probably 'no'. The biggest issue which is likely to be discussed is transfer of resources to the developing world and, of course, increasing carbon footprints along with climate justice. Transparency in climate data would be another major issue. #climatechange #COP #carbonfootprints #NCQG https://lnkd.in/g_sY4cuK

Last week, Digital Economy Startups and Innovation (DESI) Team’s Mansi Kedia and Krithika Ramnath participated in the IFS Partner's Meet by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation! The sessions were not only inspiring but truly invigorating, sparking new ideas and enthusiasm within the ecosystem. The two-day conference explored a variety of themes, including building trust and confidence, strengthening distribution, promoting pro-poor innovations through the private sector and ensuring that digital public infrastructure (DPI) works for the marginalized. At the event, Mansi presented our research on "Making UPI Universal, Accessible, Affordable, and Inclusive for All Indians." This multistage field study dives deep into the current UPI adoption rates and highlights the challenges faced by rural communities. It was a privilege to engage in meaningful discussions and collaborative activities alongside incredible partner organizations. We are especially grateful to Pawan Bakhshi, Ph.D. and Pranay S. from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for facilitating such a rich exchange of knowledge. The opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals passionate about making a difference was truly invaluable. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed to make this event so impactful and enriching. Our team left feeling motivated and excited about the future possibilities and collaborations ahead!
