IFPP members recently attended the Council for Strategic and Defense Research's roundtable discussion on 'Nuclear safety and security: An exchange of views between US and India', moderated by Amb Rakesh Sood, on the 29th of July 2024. The discussion was centred on an upcoming book ‘The Challenges of Nuclear Security: U.S. and Indian Perspectives’ edited by S. Paul Kapur, Rajeswari Rajagopalan, and Diana Wueger, and delves into exactly what issues persist when ensuring the security and safety of nuclear sites. Apart from security against natural disasters (after Fukushima, Japan), a strong emphasis was laid on cybersecurity, personnel reliability, and organisational structure, among other key areas. One key observation that was resoundingly agreed upon: underlying trust between India and the US is vital as both nations and their apparatus have come very far in terms of taking the issue of nuclear security up and making it more transparent, particularly the Indian side. It's clear that #Track2 diplomatic efforts like this can help push for a much-needed upgrade of nuclear safety regulations and policies, particularly when clean energy demands balloon. We thank #CSDR for hosting us and look forward to reading and dissecting the open-access volume whenever it's published. We just attended a lecture by the PM of Malaysia! IFPP - Indian Foreign Policy Project received invitations to ICWA's 50th Sapru House Lecture, and it was an insightful session. Mr Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim is on a State visit to India, and his lecture on the Global South and Indian-Malaysian ties reflected his convictions, strength, and due respect for a 'common humanity'. Personally, it was refreshing to see the clarity of thought and ideals in a world leader. He has had a long career, and I hope to see more of his passion playing out in addressing global issues. A warm note of thanks to the Indian Council of World Affairs for extending us an invite- it was a pleasure to attend. In an audience filled with delegations, diplomats, and press corps, we learnt a lot. Are you studying IR at Shiv Nadar University or Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA), or other unis? Reach out to us! 🌏 As the IFPP - Indian Foreign Policy Project core family expands, we aim to connect students within IR-focused programmes across India. Why? It's simple. And we can't do that from a couple of unis. That's what I started IFPP with, and so far, it has been quite a journey! 22+ Indian campuses, tie-ups with 3 think tanks/orgs, and partnering with more every month for our upcoming grassroots programs. Here's to the months to come! If you are in an IR-centric program in India, comment below/connect with me and join us at IFPP. Or share it with those you know :) ps: we also have our core (research) positions open! Click the link in the comments. #IR #IndianForeignPolicy #ForeignPolicy
