The 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 & 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 has issued a significant amendment to the EIA Notification, 2006, in response to Supreme Court directions and stakeholder feedback. ✅ For the first time, linear projects (highways, slurry pipelines, oil/gas pipelines, railways) have been clearly defined. ✅ Projects involving extraction/borrowing of ordinary earth above 20,000 cubic meters which does not require prior Environmental Clearance under this notification must strictly follow detailed environmental safeguards and the Standard Operating Procedure under the new Appendix-XIV. ✅ A district-level committee led by the District Magistrate & other key officers will evaluate and approve the quantum of earth allowed for extraction. ✅ 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞: - Preference for barren lands, silted ponds, non-agricultural areas. - Mandatory preservation & reuse of topsoil. - Strict distance norms from forests, water bodies, and eco-sensitive zones. - Proper site redevelopment post-extraction with vegetation and drainage safeguards. - Mandatory photographic documentation (pre, during, and post-extraction phases). ✅ The Ministry will conduct periodic monitoring, and extraction activities will require closure reports ensuring full site rehabilitation. This comes after the Supreme Court struck down the blanket exemption for linear projects in 2024, citing lack of definition & environmental safeguards, ensuring the balance between development & ecology is maintained. Government Exempts Key Appliances from BIS Certification! In a bid to prevent supply shortages, the government has temporarily exempted grooved copper tubes and AC compressors (2 tonnes and above) from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification. Why? With domestic production falling short and local suppliers charging higher prices than their Chinese counterparts, imports have become essential. This exemption ensures smoother supply chains and prevents disruption in production. Key Updates: Grooved copper tubes can be imported without BIS certification until 30th June 2024. AC compressors (2 tonnes and above) are exempt until 10th February 2026. There are concerns over expiring BIS approvals for Chinese compressor suppliers, which could drop the number of approved suppliers from 8 to 2.
