About us
IPPF South Asia Regional Office (SARO) is one of the six regional networks of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). IPPF is a global healthcare provider and a leading advocate of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. In the region, we work in nine countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka through the Member Associations (MA) -- IPPF accredited organizations-- and collaborative partner. In the South Asia region, which has its own unique challenges and opportunities, we advocate with governments to ensure they fulfil their commitments towards sexual reproductive and health rights for all. We support our MAs to educate young people to make informed, safer choices about their sexual health and well-being. We stand for protection of women and girls against reproductive bullying. Our MA provides medical services, counselling and support to those in need, even during humanitarian emergencies. We along with our volunteers and the Member Associations work to bring to life our vision: From choice, a world of possibilities.

Period Proud is today! We are so excited to kick off this incredible initiative, the first event of its kind in Sri Lanka's Northern Province, led by the Collective Action Against Period Poverty (CAAPP) Project at the Jaffna Cultural Center. With the support of the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and in partnership with The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka, we’re here to raise awareness and take action against period poverty, which affects 50% of menstruators across the island. Together with 13 amazing NGOs, we’re working to break the silence and build a future where no one has to face the challenges of period poverty. Let’s get Period Proud! 🩸 #periodproud2024 #caappproject #endperiodpoverty #menstrualhealthmatters Dr. Ruchitha P. Suhail Junaid Indunil Amila Gunasekara Natasha de Rosayro IPPF South Asia Region

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Rathnamala Desai, President, FPA India, on being appointed to the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF)'s Board of Trustees! Dr. Desai's dedication and leadership in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights in India continue to inspire us! 👏 #SRHR #SRHRJ #SRHR4All #Leadership
Adding yet another feather in her cap and a prestigious honor to her long list of accolades, we are thrilled to announce that Dr. Rathnamala Desai, President of FPA India, has been appointed as a Member of the IPPF Board of Trustees! This fantastic news adds strength to our ongoing 75th anniversary celebrations!! The selection of Trustees is based on individual skills, experience, and qualifications, in accordance with IPPF’s new regulations, which introduced a skills-based Board to guide the organization in line with the strategic direction set by the General Assembly (GA). Reflecting the GA’s reform recommendations, the Board comprises seven internal Trustees from IPPF and six external Trustees, with nine of the members being women and one-third are young people under 25 years of age. Dr. Desai's appointment to the Board is a testament to her outstanding merit, dedication, hard work and expertise she consistently demonstrates. Dr. Desai is the sixth of the nine illustrious Presidents who have steered FPA India over the last 75 years, to be selected by IPPF for serving on their International Board of Governance/Trusteeship. Congratulations to Dr. Desai and to all of us at FPA India!!

Gender-Based Violence in Sri Lanka: Evaluating Costs and Strategies for Health Sector Response Gender-based violence is a growing concern both globally and in Sri Lanka, posing significant challenges to the health sector. A meeting held yesterday brought together leading experts to address this critical issue, focusing on evaluating the costs and strategies for delivering essential services provided by "Mithuru Piyasa" Centres and the 24/7 Mithuru Piyasa field services delivered by Public Health Midwives attached to MOH offices. Mr. M. Suchira Suranga, Director of Organizational Learning & Evaluation at FPASL, opened the session, setting the stage for in-depth presentations and discussions. Keynotes were delivered by Ms. Verena Phipps from the World Bank Group and Dr. Chithramalee De Silva, Director of Maternal and Child Health, highlighting both global and local perspectives. Dr. Manoj Fernando outlined the meeting’s objectives, while Dr. Lakshman Senanayake and Prof. Dileep De Silva presented detailed proposals on the qualitative and quantitative components. Prof. Anuji Gamage shared the plan for fieldwork, concluding with a productive discussion. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the response and improve support systems for survivors of gender-based violence in Sri Lanka. This initiative was funded by the The World Bank Group. Provincial Directors of Health Services (PDHS), Regional Directors of Health Services (RDHS), and Directors of selected hospitals participated in the meeting. Dr. Ruchitha P. The 19th Asia Media Summit concluded with inspiring panel discussions featuring key media players, civil society organisations, policymakers, private sector partners, and government representatives from Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vanuatu, and India. The discussions centred around innovation, adaptability, Artificial Intelligence (#AI), and building a resilient media landscape while navigating legal complexities and disinformation. At the CEO Table Talk session, #IPPF ESEAOR Regional Director Tomoko Fukuda emphasised the power of media in shaping public opinion and societal discourse, particularly on sexual and reproductive health rights (#SRHR) and sustainable development. Under the theme ‘Media: The New Odyssey,’ the summit brought together 400 media professionals across Asia Pacific to explore global shifts and prioritise inclusivity to amplify diverse voices. Earlier this week, in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), we hosted a diverse group of media professionals—journalists, editors, producers, and content creators—for a workshop on reproductive justice and human rights coverage in Asia Pacific. #AsiaMediaSummit #AMS2024 #MediaTheNewOdyssey #SRHR4ALL International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) Tomoko Fukuda

🌀🇧🇩 In the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, the resilience of the sex worker community in Banishanta, a coastal village devastated by the cyclone, stands as a powerful testament to the importance of community empowerment in humanitarian crises. 🙌 Sex workers like Lovely, who work as peer educators at the clinic set up by the Population and Services Training Centre (PSTC), are making sure that life-saving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services are reaching everyone in her community in the wake of the cyclone. 👉 On #WorldHumanitarianDay, read Lovely's story to know more about these community-led interventions and how they are helping sex workers in Banishanta get access to life-saving sexual and reproductive healthcare.
