Yesterday on the auspicious day of Krishna Janmashtami Team Jalsmruti launched a pilot program called Jal Saheli in collaboration with an active local women's NGO Mazi Saheli that has a good track record and history of working with these tribal women located in a remote village in a district of Maharashtra. Jal Saheli is designed to be a training program where we train women to come together and build roof water harvesting, farm based water conservation measures (making farm bund with tree plantation and trenches and a kitchen garden for one house and farm at a time. The field based training is done after a sit-down workshop to bring resource literacy by getting them to identify, map and conserve and leverage the resources they already have - rainwater being one of them. The sit-down session gets them to start taking action on conserving and leveraging their resources like seeds, kitchen scraps, social network, cultural knowledge and traditions. Once the women are oriented mentally towards resource conservation, we then hand hold them to show how to conserve rainwater falling on their roof and farm by simple actions which they manually do as a collective. The plan is to keep handholding them with help from Jalsmruti Team until they are able to have the confidence to do it themselves. These tribal women have small landholding and even though they get a decent amount of rainfall they are water stressed because neither government nor the local NGOs have helped them show them how to conserve rainwater at house and farm level. Govt and large NGOs have a tendency for doing projects that are village scale because they provide good optics. While leaving out the opportunity for individual families to do simple water conservation at their own level. We hope to learn from this pilot scale project before attempting to scale it. If you know of any CSR or philanthropic organisation who may be interested in joining hands to learn from this pilot, please connect them to me. How did I miss knowing about this inspiring initiative of the citizen group @I Am Gurgaom during my one year stay in Delhi? Hope to visit during my next visit A must watch video story of citizens-led initiative of reclaiming and rewilding the encroached land and degraded 350 acre land near a growing city. Into a thriving biodiversity park. Despite the spectacular results, the risk of the biodiversity park being gobbled up by urban development never goes away. And the community has managed to protect it from the mindless development decisions that could have destroyed the park. Watch the full story in this well made video documentary by Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi and get inspired!! Never underestimate the power of ordinary citizens to do extraordinary work, once they decide to put their mind to it. It can often start with one or two individuala and can quickly grow into a movement. Thank you @Latika Thakural Vijay Dhasmana and @IAmGurgaon for showing the way. Share an inspiring story of citizen groups near you. Join a citizen group near you. Or be the citizen who starts a movement. #citizenpower #grassroot #rewilding #exorestoration #biodiversity #watercyclemanagement #watercrisis #urbanization #sustainabledevelopment

We are proud to share that Team Jalsmruti continued to organise yet another peer-to-peer learning and exposure visit to profitable models of natural farming in a nearby town, for the third consecutive month. We mobilised 30 farmers from our pilot village (in Maharashtra State) who attended the learning session and exposure tour. Out of the 30 participants, 20 of them who responded to our invite to attend the exposure visit were women farmers. #peertopeerlearning #jalsmruti #sustainablewater #sustainablefood #sdg6cleanwaterandsanitation #sdg13climateaction ------ Jalsmruti is a water impact NGO headquartered in India working to empower small landholding farmers to run profitable models of natural farming through conducting peer to peer learning sessions where farmers learn from one another. In addition to this, Jalsmruti is seeking funding to facilitate establishment of a best-in-class policy making cycle for scaling publicly funded proven solutions and interventions in the field of sustainable water and sustainable food. This important work is expected to contribute to creating a transparent and inclusive policy making culture which is currently totally absent in India and is the root cause of several social and environmental challenges in India. We in Jalsmruti believe that without this work, India is at serious risk of suffering from an irreversible damage to its natural resources and socially vulnerable community. Donations are invited from individuals and corporations to fund the work of Jalsmruti. All donations are tax deductible. For more information on how to make your donation please send an email to contact@jalsmruti.org with the subject line Donation. Please like/share/comment on the post to spread the word.

Jalsmruti is launching an awareness and action campaign on profitable and sustainable farming practices which would go on to benefit the producer community (farmers), natural resources and also consumers of agri food. Sustainable practices that are the focus of this awareness & action campaign are: 1) Tree Planting along Farm Bunds 2) Vermicomposting 3) Beekeeping 4) Biogas Plant One of the awareness campaign inititiative involves engaging students from urban and rural areas to take part in a poster competition where the students are invited to make hand made or digital posters on the four sustainable practices. Therefore please share the flyer for the poster competition in your urban and rural network. We have made the flyers in all regional languages.
