After years of relentless advocacy, we are thrilled to share a significant win for the environment and for Bengaluru! The Karnataka State Board of Wildlife has officially declared Hesaraghatta as the Greater Hesaraghatta Conservation Reserve. This victory is the result of the combined efforts of over 77,000 concerned citizens, environmental organizations, and activists who stood up to protect Bengaluru’s last remaining grassland. This decision is more than just a conservation win—it’s proof of the power of collective action. Back in 2021, the proposal to protect Hesaraghatta was rejected, citing commercial interests. But we didn’t give up. Through petitions, public pressure, and constant engagement, our voices were heard, and now this vital ecosystem is safeguarded from development. The grasslands, home to rare species of flora and fauna, will continue to thrive, thanks to all of you who took a stand. 🙌 Bengaluru’s rapid urbanization has placed immense pressure on its natural habitats, with many green spaces being lost to construction. Hesaraghatta represents the last major grassland in the city—a critical refuge for biodiversity and an ecological treasure that future generations deserve to experience. The success of this campaign shows that when citizens come together, we can push back against unsustainable development and prioritize the protection of our environment. This victory isn’t the end—it’s just the beginning. At Jhatkaa.org, we’re committed to continuing the fight for a sustainable and livable future. Whether it’s protecting more green spaces or tackling other environmental issues, we need your support now more than ever. Help us keep this momentum going! A small donation today will ensure that we continue to protect what matters most—our planet. Donate here: https://lnkd.in/gg95FqSx Thank you to everyone who made this possible! Let’s continue working together to create a future where nature and urban life coexist in harmony. TerreGeneration Solutions Conservation India Jacob Cherian Divya Narayanan

As Daan Utsav, the festival of giving, is celebrated across the country this week, it’s a moment for all of us at Jhatkaa.org to reflect on what giving truly means in our work. Last weekend, we teamed up with REHAU India for a cleanup drive at Lalbagh, where we collected over 100 kgs of garbage from the area around the rocky hill. Volunteers from REHAU India, students from local colleges and young supporters joined us to help make the space cleaner. This effort is part of our Citizens for a Cleaner Bengaluru initiative, which focuses on encouraging community participation in managing the city’s solid waste. With Bengaluru generating around 5000 metric tons of waste every day, the need for citizens to actively engage in waste management has never been more important. At the event, we introduced the Namma Clean Bengaluru tool, which allows citizens to report and manage waste in their neighborhoods. By combining offline engagements like these with the power of online platforms, we’re building a more active and aware citizenry, capable of addressing urban issues and engaging with local authorities. Civic engagement is central to the work we do at Jhatkaa.org. If your organization is interested in partnering on similar initiatives to make Bengaluru cleaner, we’d love to hear from you. 📧 Contact us at info@jhatkaa.org to explore how we can collaborate. #CleanBengaluru #CivicEngagement #CSR #Sustainability #SolidWasteManagement

Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26 old Chartered Accountant, died due to extreme work stress. Employed at Ernst & Young, one of the global Big Four, Anna had started working at the firm only four months ago. Following her death, Anna’s mother wrote a letter stating that Anna had been overwhelmed by long working hours, unrealistic deadlines, and excessive pressure at the workplace. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Work-related stress is a common issue across the world. A 2016 WHO study found that over 700,000 people died from heart disease and stroke caused by long working hours, highlighting the serious health risks posed by excessive workload. Amid ongoing discussions about extending working hours, such as the proposed amendment to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act which seeks to extend IT employees’ working hours to as much as 14 hours a day, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of a healthy work-life balance. Anna's death is a reminder of the dire need to re-evaluate our work culture. We must advocate for fair, humane labor practices to prevent further loss of life due to stress and overwork. Take action now by signing the petition for fair labour practices: https://lnkd.in/gQsYcsRq

Weeks after the rape and murder of a young woman doctor in Kolkata, West Bengal government has passed a new “anti-rape bill”. The new bill ‘Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024’ calls for capital punishment for rape if the victim dies or is left in a vegetative state, among other things. This has reignited the conversation on whether capital punishment is an effective solution for deterring sexual violence, or if it merely distracts from the urgent need for systemic reforms and preventive measures. Sexual Violence is deeply rooted in misogyny, power dynamics, and a culture that still devalues women. The solution lies in systemic reforms - strengthening police training, improving how cases of sexual violence are handled and transforming the justice system to focus on prevention, not just punishment. Capital punishment alone won’t break the cycle of violence - it’s time for systemic change. Join us by signing the petition demanding systemic change to ensure justice for the junior doctor raped and murdered in Kolkata. In a profession built on saving lives, what does it say about us when those who heal are left unprotected? The tragic murder of a young doctor in Kolkata is not an isolated incident—it's a symptom of a deeper issue. For too long, we’ve normalized the risks that healthcare professionals, especially women and gender non-binary individuals, face daily. But this isn't just "part of the job"—it's a systemic failure to prioritize their safety. Can we truly call ourselves progressive when those on the frontlines of healthcare are left exposed to violence, often with no recourse? This is about more than just one case. It’s about rethinking how we value the lives and well-being of our medical professionals. Let’s come together to demand the protection and respect they deserve. Change is overdue. The recent rape and murder of a young woman doctor at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has sparked huge public outrage across the nation while also raising pressing and important questions about the safety of medical staff, especially women and gender non-binary individuals — who are at a heightened risk of facing violence owing to their gender identity. After the incident, many doctors, especially women have come forth to share horrifying incidents of being subjected to violence — both physical and sexual — by patients as well as their relatives. Healthcare professionals in India spend inhumane hours being on duty without access to safe and adequate sanitation facilities and infrastructure required for breaks. This can simply no longer be excused as an occupational hazard. This is a larger question of workplace safety and gender-based violence. We are demanding justice for the woman doctor murdered in Kolkata and better safety provisions for medical staff across hospitals and medical colleges in India. Join us by signing the petition here: https://lnkd.in/g_v8dHxv National Council of Women Leaders

After 1,095 days of determined advocacy, we have a significant milestone to share. In 2021, the Kodaikanal Solid Waste Landfill overflowed into the Tiger Shola Forest, an event so extensive it was visible from space. This incident not only violated the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 but also posed a grave threat to one of India’s precious natural habitats. Our journey began with a grassroots signature campaign urging the Municipal Commissioner to address this environmental catastrophe. When promises turned into delays and inaction, we took the matter to the Madurai High Court through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). This led to a critical court order demanding reports from the Kodaikanal Municipality and other authorities. Fast forward to October 2023: the process to clear the landfill spillage from the forest began, and the municipality approved a bio-mining project for the landfill. But the real triumph came on July 22, 2024. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board imposed a fine of ₹41 lakhs on the Kodaikanal Municipality for its failure to comply with waste management regulations. This victory underscores the power of advocacy and collective effort. However, the fight is far from over. To continue protecting Kodaikanal and other vital ecosystems, your support is more crucial than ever.
