It is a tribe with its own language, cultural heritage, and religion. In school, he faced discrimination from students of other castes. In his own village, he observed serious problems such as alcoholism, poverty, and superstitious beliefs. Despite—or better, because of—the gap between his own culture and the “regular” Indian society, he managed to complete his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Anthropology and Tribal Studies. 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 (𝐞𝐱)𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞: 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐑 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 During the EMPOWER 2024 assistive technology conference, held at the National Institute of Speech and Hearing, a workshop was offered by kanthari change makers. The workshop was attended by a group of people who showed interest to provide a constructive brainstorm leading to solutions for several problems that are faced by people with disabilities in different places across the world; 𝟏. 𝐒𝐢𝐣𝐨 𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞, 𝐊𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐚, 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 When he was 9 years old, Sijo fell from a roof and landed on a fence with spikes and became paraplegic. Sijo has a car and drives, however he cannot do this fully alone, so the problem that was discussed was how wheelchair users can drive cars fully independently. 𝟐. 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐲𝐢, 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 David grew up as an orphan. During a rebel attack he lost his best childhood friend Simon, a person with disabilities. David started Light for Disability Transformation, to empower persons with various disabilities. One problem he wants to solve is how deaf people can sign in the dark, especially when dangerous situations occur. The result: A product they named Nyota (which means star), a glowing glove that provides a Voice in the dark 𝟑. 𝐄𝐧𝐨𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐡𝐨, 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐚 Enoque’s brother became disabled after an accident and later passed away. The number of people with physical disabilities is very high in Angola because of the millions of landmines that were used in the civil war, but public transport is not accessible. Enoque plans to start a company run by persons with disabilities and the discussion was about how disabled people can operate taxis to transport anyone including other disabled persons. 𝟒. 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐍𝐠𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐡 𝐍𝐠𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐚, 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐧 Blaise is hearing impaired, and because of that not able to detect the danger of the armed conflict between separatists and governmental soldiers. Blaise focuses on creating a battle alert system for the deaf and hard of hearing that can detect gunshots, grenades, drones, and fighter jet sounds. The result was a wristband that provides alert signals such as vibrations and/or flashing icons at times of threats. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 and it surely gave an insight of problems that are faced by millions of people around the world that urgently need solutions. We thank EMPOWER and everyone who has contributed. We surely hope that the products/services discussed will result in practical shapes and forms and benefit many soon. The death of Karan's father due to lack of medical care forced him to quit school and work at the age of 14. In 2013, he turned his mom’s cowshed into a clinic, and later, with villagers’ and government support he built a hospital and eventually a school. His aim is to improve rural health care and lives at large in Kalikot. Last Saturday, we celebrated the 𝟐𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (formerly known as Foerderkreis Blindenzentrum – Braille Ohne Grenzen e.V. ) in a truly memorable way! Founders Sabriye Tenberken and paul kronenberg gave a powerful talk, setting the tone for the day. Thanks to the great work of our volunteers, the "Journey in Five Acts" project idea workshop where visitors would chose a problem they want to address and worked on steps of how this could be taken to a project level, was a valuable experience. Simon Schroers presented 15 impactful organizations founded by kanthari graduates. These were only a representation of the 180+ organisations in 55 countries that are impacting the lives of thousands of people who are positioned on the sidelines of society. A Special shoutout to Sristi KC from Nepal, a 2012 kanthari graduate and founder of Blind Rocks for her lively dance workshop. And of course a big heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported Braille Without Borders and kanthari over the past 25 years. Here's to many more years of positive change!
