If you want to know the true meaning of ‘serendipity’, make a habit of browsing in bookstores. How else would I have come across ‘The Gifts of Reading’, a book everyone should own to fully appreciate the joy and value of the printed word? The book just presented itself to me when I was scanning the shelves at Kunzum. Noted writer Robert Macfarlane had published an essay on the same topic before a longer version came out with contributory essays ‘gifted’ from other authors. To take an extract from the preface by him: “It is a beautiful, tangled skein of stories, filled with surprising echoes and unexpected interlockings. Here books take flight in flocks, migrating around the world, landing in people’s hearts and changing them for a day or a year or a lifetime. Here books spark wonder or spark anger; throw open windows into other languages, other cultures, other minds; cause people to fall in love, or to fight for what is right. And here, repeatedly, books and words are given and received as gifts, prompting in turn further generosity – including the giving of each of these essays. Truly, the gift gives on, and on, and on…”
