Have you ever wondered how relevant is classroom teaching to the real world? Is the aim to just stuff in the facts or upgrade themselves with skills to adapt to 'worldly' situations? Do we want to teach students to learn how to fit into society or develop their own identity and thinking or a bit of both? Yes transformation begins with asking all the right questions and not just writing out the 'right answers'. We came across this insightful post by Will Richardson about the concept of 'manifesto' and the purpose of schools of the future, that left us thinking, whether educational transformation begins with the school or the larger community that the student is a part of. Do share your ideas in the chat box and tag a teacher who you feel would like to 'revolutionalize the rules of learning'!
What if schools moved away from writing a "mission" to writing a "manifesto" instead? As in a shared articulation of what the school community believes about learning and education, about the state of the world today, and about the future. A statement that drives both the practice and purpose of the day-to-day work with children. Frankly, what if each one of us wrote one? If I asked, "What does this community believe about how children learn most powerfully and deeply?" how might you reply? And how does that reply show up in your practice? And do your colleagues know of and share those beliefs? What are the consequences if not? Similarly, what does this community believe the purpose of school to be? What does this community believe about the world right now that informs what children should know and be able to do in this moment? And what does it believe about the arc of the future when it comes to preparing children for the lives that they will lead after they leave us? If I asked those questions to 10 people at your school, how many different answers would I get? 10? 1? Or maybe a bunch of "I don't really know"s? We risk incoherence and irrelevance if we're not clear about our beliefs. Maybe a "manifesto" sounds too radical, but I wonder what might change if every school community stated clearly what it believes about learning and the world, and then committed to acting on those beliefs together. #education #schooling #learning #edleadership #future
