At #ICEF2024 on Day 1 held at India Habitat Center, New Delhi, we delved into the pivotal role of #CircularDesign and #Materiality in shaping a sustainable future. Moderated by Ms. Monika Shrivastava from JSW Cement, who guided the panel through discussions on sustainability, policy needs, and practical implementation of circular economy principles. Our panelists provided profound insights into redesigning products and systems for a #CircularEconomy.
The panel brought together industry leaders and experts to discuss the role of #circulardesign and #materiality in achieving #sustainabledevelopment goals (#SDGs). The session focused on innovative approaches to eliminate waste, utilize by-products, and promote regenerative practices in various industries.
Mr. Padmakar Pandey from ABFRL shared their Re-Earth Initiative, focusing on #ResourceEfficiency, #ClimateAction, sustainable raw materials, and chemical safety. Ms. Manjri Gopalan of Hewlett Packard Enterprise emphasized the importance of modular and repairable IT products, promoting longevity and reducing waste. Mr.Vaibhav Rathi from GIZ India emphasized the need for a life cycle assessment (#LCA) at the core of materiality considerations and discussed successful implementations such as the use of fly ash in construction and the operation of over 20 construction and demolition (C&D) waste plants. Ms. Sunitha Varadan of LoopM Alternatives also highlighted innovative agro-based packaging solutions and projects aimed at reducing food wastage. The panel emphasized the critical need to design out waste and pollution from the very beginning of the product lifecycle. This involves rethinking how products are made and used, ensuring that materials are utilized to their fullest extent.
Key outcomes included actionable strategies for #WasteReduction, fostering #Innovation in material use, and enhancing consumer engagement in #SustainablePractices. The panel underscored the need for policy support and consumer education to drive the shift towards a sustainable, circular economy.
The discussion underscored the importance of aligning efforts with SDGs 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). These goals are pivotal for fostering sustainable practices across industries and ensuring long-term environmental and economic benefits.
