Actor Tamannaah Bhatia was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding a money laundering probe linked to the ‘HPZ Token’ mobile app scam. The app allegedly duped investors by falsely promising huge returns through Bitcoin mining. Sources say Bhatia received funds for a celebrity appearance, but no incriminating evidence has been found. The ED has named 299 entities, including 76 Chinese-controlled firms, in the case. The investigation led to nationwide raids and the seizure of assets worth ₹455 crore. #CSuiteConversations | Shortly after becoming the Tata Group's de facto leader in 2017, Natarajan Chandrasekaran proposed the 'UniEVerse' plan, with a strong focus on sustainability. Tata Motors was the lynchpin of this plan, with its electric vehicle ecosystem. But bringing this vision of the UniEVerse to life called for strong linkages with sister companies such as Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, TCS, Tata Digital, Tata Elxsi, Tata Motors Finance, and Tata AutoComp. Of these, Tata AutoComp (TACO) emerged as the conglomerate's key partner in its EV journey, ensuring access to cutting-edge drivetrain technology. This strategy aimed to create a comprehensive and integrated approach to electric vehicle development within the Tata Group. And so, when we got a chance to sit down with TACO Chairman Arvind Goel, it was an opportunity we couldn’t miss. From understanding what makes him tick, to what leaders need to get right, and how TACO steered things onto a high growth trajectory, we covered a lot in this brief, but impactful interaction that forms out latest episode of C-Suite Conversations. India found themselves on the wrong side of history during their ongoing Test Match against New Zealand. With a total of just 46 runs, the team recorded its lowest score ever on home soil, leaving fans and players alike in disbelief. The Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, a venue known for its lively atmosphere and enthusiastic crowd, saw the weather play a significant role in the test match. With rain disrupting play on day one and play being adjourned without a ball bowled, day two was ripe for a thrilling encounter, but what unfolded was anything but. Captained by Rohit Sharma, India won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision that would soon be scrutinized. The overcast skies and damp conditions presented a challenging environment for the batsmen, yet the team believed they could capitalize on the situation. India’s innings unravelled in a manner that left spectators stunned. The team was dismissed for a mere 46 runs, marking not just a new low for Indian cricket at home but also its third-lowest total in Test history. This score of 46 also set a new record for the lowest total in Asia, surpassing the previous record held by the West Indies against Pakistan in 1986. Such statistics only add to the weight of this historic failure. These scores serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of cricket. Even the strongest teams can falter under pressure, and every match (indeed, every session) is an opportunity for redemption. It is not for nothing the sport is known for its glorious uncertainties. One can only hope that this test plays out somewhat similarly to the India-New Zealand Test Match at Mohali in 1999, and India can mount something of a comeback. The Dying Art of Indian Theatre: Natyaholic’s Fight for Survival The Legacy of Indian Theatre India has a rich history of theatre, with legends like Girish Karnad and Vijaya Mehta shaping its cultural fabric. But today, theatre struggles to survive against the rise of cinema and digital entertainment. Still, there’s hope! The Birth of Natyaholic Theatre In 2018, a group of passionate theatre lovers from Pune, led by Omkar Yadav, formed Natyaholic Theatre. What started as a dream among 20 young friends soon turned into a relentless journey of hard work and challenges. The Struggles & Sacrifices Despite initial successes, financial struggles hit hard. “We performed anywhere we could—auditoriums, competitions, you name it. But travel, accommodation, and production costs added up. Sometimes, we didn’t even break even,” shares Mrunal, a dedicated troupe member. Adapting to Changing Tastes By 2023, Natyaholic found themselves at a crossroads. Audiences seemed more drawn to glamour than raw, emotional storytelling. “People are confused… they come looking for spectacle, not heartfelt performances,” says Rutuja, another core member. Can theatre still survive in this age? The Fight Continues But Natyaholic isn’t giving up. With their latest series, The Spirit, they aim to remind people of the magic of live theatre. “Our goal is to revive real acting, real stories,” says Omkar. Their journey is a story of passion, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of theatre. #infocus | Change is taking place at a dizzying pace on the work front. On this giant corporate stage, we all play our parts. Some of the greyhounds racing ahead, some of dinosaurs doing their best impression of a deer stuck in the headlights as a meteor streaks through the sky and draws a line under their time. “So what?”, we hear you say. “Change is a constant for society and industry. Leaders declare its inevitability all the time.” We hear you, and to that, we say this. The difference is that this time, the meteor is a technological one called Generative AI, and it’s hurtling towards terra firma at light speed. And more than anything else, it’s impacting the prospects of women in leadership positions, if the World Economic Forum’s gender gap report is anything to go by. To understand what it takes to be a greyhound in a corporate landscape evolving at breakneck speed. In a significant shift within the edtech landscape, Mayank Kumar, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Upgrad, has decided to step back from his executive role. This change comes as Kumar embarks on a new venture aimed at facilitating the placement of skilled Indian professionals abroad, particularly in the healthcare sector. With Kumar stepping back, Upgrad's Founder and Chairman Ronnie Screwvala is set to take on a more prominent role within the company. His increased involvement is expected to steer Upgrad towards its ambitious plans for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in India. This strategic move could enhance investor confidence and align the company more closely with public market expectations. Despite Kumar's departure from day-to-day operations, the shareholding structure remains intact. Kumar retains an 8% stake in Upgrad, while Screwvala holds a substantial 44%. This stability in ownership ensures that the company’s core values and mission remain unchanged, even as leadership dynamics shift. With Ronnie Screwvala taking a more active role, Upgrad is poised to focus on its upcoming IPO plans. This strategic move aligns with the current bullish sentiment in the market for new listings, especially among new-age firms. Screwvala’s deeper involvement is expected to resonate positively with investors. His track record as a serial entrepreneur adds credibility to Upgrad’s growth narrative, making it an attractive option for potential investors. As Upgrad prepares for its IPO and navigates the complexities of the edtech landscape, the future looks promising. With a focus on innovation, strategic partnerships, and employee development, Upgrad is well-positioned to thrive in the coming years.
