The heart of triaxial bioprinting lies in the meticulously engineered triaxial nozzle that acts like a three-in-one pen. The nozzle has three separate channels, each capable of holding and dispensing a distinct bioink. Instead of a single ink, it dispenses three different bioinks in unison. The design of the nozzle plays an important role. The diameter of each channel and the way they converge at the tip influence how materials are deposited and interact with each other. Certain nozzle configurations even allow the in-situ mixing of biomaterials within the nozzle itself, offering control over the construct’s architecture. Triaxial bioprinting necessitates the careful selection and formulation of bioinks. Each bioink needs to be compatible with the others in terms of rheological factors, gelation kinetics, and other potential interactions. All of these bioinks are formulated differently, each with unique properties, but when combined together, they fabricate highly intricate structures with built-in features like vascular networks. #triaxialbioprinting #bioprinting

The escalating incidence of breast cancer necessitates novel methodologies for effective drug screening and personalized treatment strategies. Traditional 2D cell culture models fall short in mimicking the complex interactions within the tumor microenvironment, limiting their utility in accurately predicting therapeutic outcomes. To overcome this, Dr. Falguni Pati and his team, at Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad have harnessed the capabilities of our Trivima Bioprinter to pioneer the use of decellularized adipose tissue (DAT)-based hydrogels for 3D bioprinting breast cancer models. This innovative approach allowed for creating 3D tumour models developed from caprine adipose tissue that closely replicate the physical and biochemical landscape of breast cancer tissues. This novel bioink formulation does not require additional viscosity modifiers, making it efficient and reliable. The DAT-based bioink supported rapid fabrication of 3D breast cancer models in a 96-well plate format, significantly enhancing the potential for high throughput drug screening. The bioprinted microtumors demonstrated excellent cellular viability and tumor cell-matrix interactions, paving the way for more effective in vitro drug testing. Our Trivima bioprinter’s precision and reliability were key in achieving these results, showcasing the potential of high throughput bioprinting in cancer research and personalized medicine.
