To illustrate this, we at Orgleap used the game of Jenga to demonstrate the principles of scaling agile within an organization. This simple yet profound game offers valuable insights into how we can approach and implement agile transformation effectively.
🏗️ Foundation
In Jenga, the game starts with a stable tower of uniformly sized blocks. Similarly, scaling agile requires a strong foundation built on a shared understanding of agile principles and values. Everyone must be on the same page about the purpose and benefits of agile. A solid foundation ensures that as the organization grows, it remains grounded in its core agile values.
⏳ Increment
As the Jenga game progresses, players remove blocks from lower levels and place them on top, incrementally increasing the tower's height. This mirrors agile teams working in small, incremental steps, delivering value iteratively. Continuous monitoring is essential in both Jenga and agile, ensuring that the structure remains sound and can support further growth.
🔧 Adjustment
In Jenga, minor adjustments are often needed to maintain the tower's stability. In scaling agile, these adjustments come through regular feedback loops, retrospectives, and process improvements.
