Here's how near-expiry produce helps reduce water waste: Reduced Demand on Agriculture: By prioritizing near-expiry items, we choose food that's already been grown and transported. This lowers the overall demand on agricultural production, which requires significant water for irrigation. The less food we waste, the less water is needed to grow replacements. Shifting Consumption Habits: Near-expiry produce often leans towards plant-based options. Choosing these over meat products reduces our "virtual water footprint." Meat production requires a much higher amount of embedded water throughout its lifecycle compared to most fruits and vegetables. Extending Shelf Life at Home: Many near-expiry items can have their shelf life extended with proper storage techniques. Using crisper drawers for vegetables, cool dark places for fruits, or freezing methods like blanching before freezing helps us utilize the food before it spoils. This prevents wasted water used to grow the produce. Composting Scraps: Even produce past its prime isn't a complete water loss. Composting kitchen scraps creates nutrient-rich fertilizer for gardens or houseplants. This reduces reliance on commercially produced options that might have a higher water footprint due to manufacturing and transportation. In essence, focusing on near-expiry produce contributes to a more sustainable food system by reducing water usage in agriculture and promoting responsible consumption habits. #perieatable #foodwaste #foodloss #watersecurity #bengaluru #sustainable

The Bangalore Water Crisis Bangalore, a major Indian metropolis, is facing a critical water shortage. The city, once nicknamed the "Garden City," is experiencing a multi-pronged crisis. Rainfall shortfalls have reduced water levels in the Cauvery River, the city's main water source. Additionally, rapid urbanization has led to a surge in borewell usage, causing a drastic decline in groundwater reserves. Bangalore's booming population further strains the existing water infrastructure, leaving many areas with restricted water access and reliance on expensive water tankers. This crisis threatens sanitation, hygiene, and economic activity in the city, demanding immediate and effective solutions for water conservation and sustainable management.
