What does Digital Self-Determination mean for people with disabilities? Our first Studio in Delhi brought together diverse voices and lived experiences to explore this critical question. Through meaningful discussions and collaborative sessions, our participants shared powerful insights about digital accessibility, autonomy, and inclusion in our increasingly digital world. This marked the beginning of our Digital Self-Determination Studios series, a collaborative initiative with Design Beku and Swissnex in India, Consulate General of Switzerland. In our subsequent studios, we brought together people with disabilities, technologists, designers, and policy makers in Mumbai and Bengaluru for rich conversations that are detailed in a comprehensive report. Watch this space for more insights from our report! (linked in the comments) #DigitalInclusion #Accessibility #DigitalRights

In early September, our wonderful colleagues Yashita Kandhari and Riddhima Sharma, Ph.D. attended Akshara Centre’s Roundtable Discussion on Sexual Harassment in Public Spaces, which brought together representatives from diverse organizations to share their experiences in preventing sexual harassment, and approaches to emergency response and redressal. We discussed the pervasiveness of sexual harassment and the importance of preventing everyday #harassment rather than only acting when it escalates into severe forms of assault.  During the discussion, participants explored effective strategies from national gender-based violence (GBV) surveys and community intervention techniques. 👉 We examined the mental health implications of sexual harassment and the specific threats faced by trans individuals.  🚫 We discussed approaches to response and redressal of #sexualharassment such as through the implementation of laws and policies, training bus conductors and drivers on prevention in public transport, collaborating with police, the importance of engaging men in prevention efforts, and the necessary role of bystanders in emergency responses.  📍 We spoke about the social context of harm, and the importance of accounting for social location in creating strategies for prevention and response.  📳 Participants also brought up how the design of public and digital spaces contributes to perpetrating violence. For instance, certain office areas that become deserted at night or digital platforms where harmful content is amplified by algorithms.  🌐 While sharing insights from TechSakhi, Point of View’s omnichannel, multilingual digital security helpline, along with strategies for enhancing online safety, we also discussed how violence is a continuum and the importance of including #digitalspaces in our discussion of public spaces. We’d like to extend a big thank you to Akshara Centre for facilitating these important conversations! The #roundtable created a collaborative environment for us to brainstorm and work together on strategies to make a meaningful impact in curbing harassment.

One of the most amazing things that have filled up my time the last few months, has been an incredible conversation between the teams at the Goethe Institut Indien, Point of View and Digital Narratives Studio to think about how we create narrative pathways and learning engagements with art that seeks to critique and change the world. For the ambitious, critical, radical, provocative, and incredibly powerful exhibition: Empowerment: Art and Feminism, we are very thrilled to be the Education and Outreach partners! We have been trying to think about how people make meaning of art, how we interact with it, how do we make it familiar, and how narratives that are difficult can become invitational rather than confrontational. We have developed a learning pathway called 'Humpowerment - Into the Multi-logue' that offers a self-driven interactive pathway to engaging with the different themes and concerns of the exhibition, and an experimental implementation of the human library as a way of generating dialogue. Feminist narratives can only thrive when all of us are talking about it. Our attempt has been to reduce the threshold of conversations and engage with groups which would otherwise not interact with these art exhibition spaces, and in the process, we have learned a lot about feminist ideas, dissemination practices, and the power of collective dialogues. Do have a look, and if you are in Pune, from the 5th to 25th October, register to get talking. This is one of the first locations of the exhibition and we will be travelling to more cities, with different approaches and expanded invitations for engagement, so do keep an eye out for it.
