Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, delivered the keynote address at The Quantum Summit today during the India Mobile Congress 2024, hosted by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India (DST) and the Department of Telecommunications ( DOT ). The summit witnessed the presence of eminent dignitaries and thought leaders driving India's quantum technology advancements. In his address, Prof. Sood highlighted India's pioneering legacy of Prof. S.N.Bose in quantum science, and underscored the vast potential of quantum technologies in sectors such as quantum computing in life sciences, finance and sustainability. He also emphasised on initiating a national citizen quantum awareness program to leverage the impact of quantum technologies for the nation’s growth. Other dignitaries who participated in the event include Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology; Dr. Ajai Chowdhry, Chairman, Mission Governing Body, National Quantum Mission; and Dr. Jay Gambetta, Vice President, IBM – Quantum.

The PSA’s office aims to provide pragmatic and objective advice to the Prime Minister and the cabinet in matters of Science and Technology. The Office of PSA was placed under the Cabinet Secretariat in August, 2018. Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood is currently serving as the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. Our vision is to help enable and empower all spheres of science and technology so that the execution of programs is effective for society and the economy.

Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, participated today in the Second International Methanol Seminar and Expo as the Guest of Honour. Graced by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister for Ministry of Road Transport & Highways - India as the Chief Guest, the seminar is being co-organised by NITI Aayog and Methanol Institute, USA to deliberate on the various aspects of methanol production and utilisation. In his address, Prof. Sood emphasised methanol’s potential in India’s clean energy transition through domestic methanol production by coal gasification, highlighting its role in enhancing energy security, driving sustainable industrial growth, and reducing overall carbon emissions. The U.S.-India Award Ceremony for the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (#iCET), under the United States–India Science and Technology Endowment Fund (#USISTEF), was organized on October 10, 2024, at The Leela Palace, New Delhi. The event celebrated the awarding of 17 outstanding projects in Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence, showcasing the strength of Indo-U.S. collaboration in driving innovation and creating a lasting impact. The awardees were honored by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Hon'ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, and Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office; Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions; Department of Atomic Energy; and Department of Space, Government of India, and Mr. Eric Garcetti, U.S. Ambassador to India (U.S. Embassy India ). Distinguished dignitaries who shared special addresses included Dr. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (India DST), Government of India, and Dr. Seth Center, Acting Special Envoy, Office of the Special Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technology. Anusandhan National Research Foundation (#ANRF) has launched the first two initiatives, namely Prime Minister Early Career Research Grant (PMECRG) and the Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas -Electric Vehicle (MAHA- EV) Mission. Intending to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application, PMECRG is designed to facilitate ease of research by nurturing young researchers and by investing in early career researchers, while the MAHA- EV Mission is part of ANRF’s Advancement in High-Impact Areas (MAHA) program, focusing on the development of key EV technologies to reduce dependency on imports, promote domestic innovation, and position India as a global leader in the EV sector. At the inaugural meeting of the ANRF Governing Board, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in September 2024, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, also participated to drive forward the operationalisation of ANRF. Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, participated today at an event as the Chief Guest to mark the inauguration of a global partnership between Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) and The International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS), under the aegis of India AMR Innovation Hub (IAIH) to address the challenge of antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) across the One Health domain. As the steering head of National One Health Mission and chairman of India AMR Innovation Hub (IAIH), Prof. Sood congratulated C-CAMP and ICARS for their pioneering partnership and highlighted the critical role of innovation in addressing the AMR challenge through novel diagnostic approaches and new interventions for treatment. Prof. Sood also underscored that India’s forthcoming National Action Plan (NAP) 2.0 on AMR will adopt a unified One Health approach, focusing on indigenous solutions that are more accessible and better suited to local needs. The Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) held the first Nodal Officers Meeting for I-STEM Portal today at Vigyan Bhawan Annexe . The meeting was chaired by Dr (Mrs.) Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary, Office of PSA, mainly to apprise about the concept of I-STEM Portal and its utility in connecting researchers to resources. The meeting brought together the representatives of 15 different Ministries/Departments who were familiarized with the operational module of the portal, that was launched and dedicated to the Nation by Honble PM on 3rd January 2020. Dr. Maini highlighted the significance of I-STEM Portal and said that the portal was developed with an aim to share research facilities available at publicly funded R&D institutions thereby ensuring equal access to resarchers/ users in tier 2/3 cities leading to effective utilization of these publicly funded resources. She emphasized on coordinated efforts from all concerned ministries/ departments to create a research ecosystem in the country which reverberates with the goals of National Education Policy (#NEP) 2020 and aligns with the mandate of Anusandhan National Research Foundation (#ANRF). She requested all the nodal officers to co-ordinate with the institutes under their respective administrative ministries and ensure that all the publicly funded equipment available in the institutes are uploaded on I-STEM Portal. Dr.Vishal Choudhary, Scientist-F, Office of PSA presented about the genesis and establishment of the I-STEM portal. He informed that I-STEM has total 23,068 users registered as on date, which mostly comprises of academic users (22,447) followed by industry (246) and start-ups (170). There are 2402 institutions as on date that have registered on I-STEM Portal and total 26745 equipment have been uploaded on I-STEM portal. This was followed by an interactive discussion with the nodal officers on the way forward to ensure all institutes are on board within the next three months. It was suggested for effective implementation , I- STEM has to conduct a one on one interaction with each concerned ministries/departments and help them to get registered on the I-STEM Portal.

Mr. Akshay Sahni, Country Head of Chevron India, called on Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and Dr (Mrs.) Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary, today to discuss Chevron’s US$ 1 billion investment in the Chevron Engineering and Innovation Excellence Center (Chevron ENGINE) in Bengaluru. Prof. Sood welcomed Chevron’s entry in India and emphasised on collaborations that can help the Indian energy sector by leveraging Chevron’s experience. Dr. Maini underscored the need to also align Chevron's initiatives with India’s priorities in artificial intelligence, innovation, and digital transformation to bolster the nation’s leadership in the technology sector.
