Biggest reason why technical folks perform better in product management role? They already know what they need from a PM. Ask any engineer and he/she will give various reasons why some PMs on their team are a gem while few are best to be avoided at all cost. Here are the key reasons why engineers hate bad PMs. 1. Arrogance and lack of respect for engineer’s opinions - You lack empathy. 2. Lack of technical understanding - You don't appreciate or understand their line of work. 3. Do not trust efforts and timelines - You push your timelines onto them. 4. Changing requirements and priorities - You can't prioritize and plan well. 5. Lack Agile knowledge but adamant to follow Agile - Know their process 6. Half cooked requirements - Depth is missing leading to bugs 7. Not involving early in the requirement phase - You leave surprises for them 8. Fail to create a cushion between devs and business - Sales can directly come to them for quick changes. 9. Failure to take ownership end to end - Handling requirements is not the end of the work for you. 10. No clarity on why some feature is being implemented - You don't share the why behind something If you are doing any of the things above, it is time to change your way of working. Agree?
