Dr.SURESH KAPITI stressed how protecting proprietary data becomes complicated under different regulatory frameworks, urging a more standardized approach to global compliance. Dr. Charu Jain showed how countries like China and Indonesia have surpassed India in global chemical compliance, due to their robust, integrated data systems—India needs to catch up! Prof. ANJU SINGH focused on the gaps in sustainability data reporting in the BRSR, pushing for sector-specific data collection to make meaningful progress. Mr. Anil Jauhri added valuable insights into creating alternate systems for product certification that could better align with global standards like the CBAM. His session on Quality Control Orders (QCOs) on Chemicals was packed with critical insights into how these mandatory regulations are reshaping the chemical industry in India. Here’s a breakdown of what Shri Kaul delivered: 🔑 QCOs Defined: QCOs are technical regulations that require chemical products to conform to Indian Standards with certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). These regulations apply to both domestic and imported products, ensuring continuous compliance through factory assessments and testing. 🔑 Impact on the Industry: With 57 chemical products already covered under QCOs, Shri Kaul emphasized the protection they offer to local industries. However, importers and traders see them as restrictive, causing friction in international trade. 🔑 Timelines and Flexibility: Since the first QCO in 2018, the Indian government has become more flexible, offering a six-month preparation period and regularly consulting stakeholders to adjust timelines and address concerns. ⚠️ Challenges in Implementation: Shri Kaul didn’t shy away from discussing the challenges industries face, from test method variations to restrictive labeling requirements. Fortunately, BIS is working proactively with industries, with RRMA actively helping to smooth out compliance issues. 🌟 Mr. SANJEEV GOKHALE’s Session on CBAM: A Session You Definitely Shouldn’t Have Missed at #RRMA 2024! 🌍 While some of you were perhaps “too busy,” Mr. Sanjeev Gokhale, President of Sanmar Group, delivered a can't-miss presentation on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) at the RRMA event. Spoiler alert: if you missed it, you're going to regret it! Here’s a quick rundown of Mr. Gokhale’s key points: 🔑 #CBAM Overview & Timeline: CBAM was introduced to align imported goods with the EU’s climate standards. The Transition Phase runs from October 2023 to December 2025, with full implementation beginning in January 2026. Exporters to the EU in sectors like Iron & Steel, Cement, Aluminium, and more will be required to report emissions and use CBAM certificates. 🔑 Challenges for Indian Industry: Mr. Gokhale didn’t shy away from the challenges, from high green technology costs to the validity of Indian carbon credit certificates. He also raised concerns about data confidentiality, carbon valuation differences, and financing greener production methods. 🔑 Fairness & Compliance Concerns: CBAM is seen as a unilateral regulation, raising fairness issues, especially for developing nations.
