📣 Project Update: Swach Sundar Sikanderpur The area under the metro lines had become a dumping ground, with pillars gradually turning into dumping points. The main reason for this was that shopkeepers and households were dumping waste around these pillars. To address this issue, our Saahas team worked closely with the Sikanderpur Market Association and took the following steps: 1. Waste Removal: Removed around 450 kilograms of waste 2. Area Cordon: Cordoned the area with iron mesh and installed iron meshes 3. Beautification: Conducted cleaning, painting, and beautification drives to improve the appearance and prevent further dumping 4. Community Engagement: Motivated market shop owners to plant trees and take ownership of keeping their surroundings clean 5. Monitoring: Started regular monitoring to maintain cleanliness and prevent the area from becoming a dumping ground again. #SwachSundarSikanderpur #CleanAndGreen #SaahasForChange #MetroCleanUp #CommunityPower #SustainableLiving #NoMoreDumping #BeautifySikanderpur #CleanIndiaMission

#Plastics have been widely ostracized as they are indestructible, and have permeated in all layers of the ecosystem including in human bodies. Owing to their versatility and convenience, plastic substitutes and plastic-like materials have gained popularity. While they may seem revolutionary, it's crucial to understand that a material's environmental impact cannot be solely determined by its composition. The #HimachalPradesh government's notification on compostable plastics underscores this point. They have stated that owing to the state’s low temperature, these bags which require a temperature of 35-40 degrees for a few months, will not biodegrade in the state. The fact is that despite claims of eco-friendliness, compostable plastics do not degrade on their own, a fact also flagged by the Bureau Of Indian Standards (Bis) in 2023, as they explicitly stated that 100% biodegradable plastics do not currently exist in India. There are only 9 industrial composting plants in India and the logistics of composting such plastics is currently not viable. And yet this material is increasingly being used and discarded even in remote and rural locations. Due to their resemblance to conventional plastics, they are difficult to differentiate and add to the ever increasing problem of plastic pollution. Hence, focus must remain on sustainable consumption practices – #Refuse, #Reuse, #Repair, and #Segregate – 'green' materials can not replace ‘green’ habits .

Himachal Pradesh Bans Biodegradable and Compostable Plastics: Himachal Pradesh has taken a significant step towards environmental conservation by banning biodegradable and compostable plastic bags. While these materials are often seen as eco-friendly alternatives, their degradation depends on specific conditions that are not naturally achievable in the state’s climatic environment. These bags require sustained temperatures between 35°C and 40°C for approximately six months to decompose effectively s per the document. However, in Himachal Pradesh, the average temperatures seldom reach this range and often drop below freezing during winters. As a result, these so-called biodegradable and compostable plastics fail to degrade in real-world conditions, leading to pollution and littering similar to conventional plastics. To address this challenge, the government has amended the definition of “non-biodegradable material” under the H.P. Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 2023, to include materials that fail to degrade under the state’s natural climatic conditions. The ban extends to single-use plastic items, including carry bags, thermocol cutlery, plastic banners, and other listed items, ensuring a stricter framework for waste management. This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to combating plastic pollution, creating a cleaner environment, and setting an example for others to follow. #compostable #HimachalPradesh #himalayas #plasticwaste #singleuseplastics #sustainability #packaging

The #primitive quick fix solution adopted by Municipal Corporation of Delhi to dispose of waste by burning it in #wastetoenergy plants, is environmentally unfriendly, hazardous to human health and requires substantial capital investment. This approach directly contradicts the principles of the #triplebottomline, which emphasizes balancing environmental, social, and economic considerations. Furthermore, it undermines community acceptance by creating apprehension about waste processing facilities near residential areas. A more sustainable and equitable approach requires a systemic shift towards #decentralized waste processing. This approach prioritizes #resourcerecovery and #environmentalprotection while #creatingjobopportunities for local communities. It aligns with the principles of environmental sustainability and fosters greater community acceptance. We urge MCD to rethink its #SWMstrategy to include sustainable solutions like #composting, #biogas and #recycling instead of adding more waste to energy plants. https://lnkd.in/gVyQfdtE

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲! Every time we build new homes, renovate existing spaces, or craft beautiful interiors, we generate Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste. While we focus on aesthetics, strength, and durability, we often overlook the environmental consequences of this waste. Unfortunately, a significant portion of C&D waste ends up in parks, lakes, and on footpaths, not only tarnishing the beauty of our surroundings but also causing serious issues like air pollution, soil infertility, and health hazards. This often happens because stakeholders may be unaware of responsible disposal practices—or worse, choose to ignore them. The first step is awareness. We recognized the importance of educating Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) about the challenges of C&D waste and equipping them with actionable solutions to manage it effectively during our Circular Realty project in Bengaluru, supported by Tata Realty. Do check out the poster to learn how we were enabling safe disposal of C&D waste in Bengaluru. #Sustainability #WasteManagement #CDWaste
