The Project "SBIF CONSERW: ARANYA - JNPA Dense Forestation" was inaugurated at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port SEZ, Nhava Sheva by Shri. Sanjay Prakash, MD, SBI Foundation along with dignitaries from JNPA. This green initiative aims to plant 1,00,000 saplings of over 50 native species across 7 acres, using the Miyawaki method to create a thriving and resilient forest ecosystem. The project is a significant step towards JNPA’s vision of becoming a 'Green Port'. With 1,09,220 saplings already planted, the trees have reached an impressive average height of 2.5 feet, achieving a 100% survival rate. This successful effort is not only enhancing biodiversity but also sequestering approximately 2,500 tonnes of carbon annually, mitigating air pollution, and contributing to climate resilience. Together with JNPA, we are creating a sustainable future by transforming degraded land into a lush forest ecosystem, helping combat climate change, and improving the air quality in the region. The Red Pandas, affectionately known as the "firefox," are a rare and captivating species can be found in the high-altitude forests of the Eastern Himalayas, including regions of India, Nepal, and China. Unfortunately, their population has dwindled, and they are now classified as endangered by the IUCN, with India offering them the highest legal protection under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Red Pandas play an essential ecological role by dispersing seeds, contributing to forest regeneration and supporting biodiversity in the Himalayas. However, these gentle creatures face significant threats from poaching, wildlife trading, habitat loss, and climate change, particularly due to their bamboo-dependent diet. Every year, International Red Panda Day is celebrated to raise awareness and drive conservation efforts for this endangered species. Since 2021, SBI Foundation, in collaboration with WWF India, has been working on safeguarding Red Pandas in Kalimpong district of West Bengal, and Sikkim through initiatives such as population study of Red Panda, sustainable habitat management through solid waste management and adapting Improved Cook Stove (ICS), and effective training and capacity building among community. SBI Foundation has even adopted the Red Panda as their mascot to spread awareness and rally support for the protection of this magnificent and iconic mammal and their habitats in India.
