Our pursuit to develop #contextual school models took us to Ropar district of Punjab with our local partner Simple Education Foundation.  Driving through highways, walking through farms we visited schools, offices & communities to meet many stakeholders, government officials, teachers, children, caregivers as well as community volunteers and elders. What did we learn? - We learned from them about their deep love for the region & language, the visceral pain of partition & regional conflicts that they feel in their community. - The worry of migration and youth unemployment, falling physical health and food habits in children. - Their values of service are rooted in faith & religion, and the joy in celebrations that shape their identity.   What are we reflecting on? A mother expressed during an FGD that it is essential for her that children are fluent in Punjabi, as the language is a vital link to their faith, culture, and regional identity reflecting their strong bond with the community and the state. This reminded us of how our languages play a central role in the connection we feel to our land and our identities. We continue to reflect on how we can integrate multiple languages in our work with children in different contexts. How do you approach understanding context in your work? We would love to know! The Indian education system is shifting away from rote learning and we are supporting teachers to lead this movement! 🏫 #NEP2020 Most of us have grown up wishing we had more flexibility to explore and experiment in our classrooms, or the will to showcase our learning beyond textbooks. This wish will now be the reality for millions of children in Indian Government schools! ➡️ “The aim will be to achieve learning outcomes as per global standards, rather than just content memorization, and shift towards competency-based learning.”, New Education Policy 2022 To bring this policy into action, states across India have launched Competency-Based Education programs that aim at building “competencies”, that knowledge, skills, and mindsets that help children thrive, and not just engage in rote memorization. SEF has been supporting the State Governments of #Delhi, #Punjab, and #Haryana to ensure teachers are equipped and supported with the skills, tools, and mindsets they need to lead this change in classrooms! This morning, as the first rays of the sun touched the horizon, over 300 people gathered at Urban Akhara, Sector 58, Gurgaon, for Sunstone’s Educathon—a run with heart and purpose. From 5-year-olds to individuals over 60, participants from all walks of life united to champion a cause that resonates deeply. 🏃♂️🏃♀️💪 The atmosphere was electric as each step taken brought us closer to fulfilling dreams—every kilometer run was a step towards ensuring education for all.
