On Friday, Oct 25th, we successfully conducted Shiksha Samvaad - a dialogue on education equity in India. The Mumbai event brought together a powerhouse of voices—CSOs, philanthropists, industry leaders, and community advocates—all united for change. Some highlights from the evening: ✨The Fireside Chat between Apurva Purohit, Co-Founder of Aazol & Independent Director at LTIMindtree, and SD Shibulal, Former CEO and Co-Founder, Infosys, & Trustee, The Shibulal Family Philanthropic Initiatives (SFPI), saw a discussion on the need for collective action at different levels to improve the public education system in India. They spoke about how Shikshagraha is pioneering such collective action and encouraging all stakeholders to share a common goal. ✨A discussion between Dr Santosh Mathew , Ex-IAS Officer & Advisor- ShikshaLokam, Soumitra Pandey, Co-Founder and Partner, India Impact Sherpas & Advisor- Shikshagraha, and Urmila Kumari, Co-Founder of Jyoti Mahila Samakhya, Bihar explored actionable insights for establishing the movement’s guiding principles and promoting collaboration across sectors. They shared many insights from their on-ground experiences and how they can be used to implement a large-scale movement. ✨Khushboo Awasthi on behalf of the Shikshagraha team honoured Urmila Didi for her inspiring contributions toward women's education in Bihar; Nagendrappa (Karnataka Education Dept) for his innovative 'Baagilu Muchchada Shaale' (A school with open doors) initiative, to keep the school open 24/7 for children, so they do not miss out on education; and youth leaders - Nancy Rai and Aman Mishra from Had-Anhad, for their consistent drive to help fellow students through peer learning programs at their college. ✨We also had some wonderful performances by Vijaya Bharti and Siddharth Kokate who narrated a beautiful poem on the importance of education; and a dance performance on our theme song by students from The Apprentice Project (TAP) ✨Nominations for the 'Shikshagraha Leadership Awards' by the SFPI are now open, celebrating leaders in the education ecosystem. #ThisIsMyShikshagraha Thank you Amita Chauhan for becoming a #Shikshagraha champion. Here's to the empowering journey and partnership for the #educationequity. 🙌 #ShikshaSamvadMumbai
Shikshagraha - Every step towards education All you need to do is look at the shining, hopeful faces of the young girls in the photo to know that they, along with every child, deserve the best and it’s up to each one of us, to ensure we can make this possible. Last week, I was privileged to spend an evening immersed in the amazing energy of Shiskagraha - a people’s education movement that is dedicated to improving ALL public schools in India by 2030. Do you know how many schools that is? The answer is ONE MILLION. Yes, you read that correctly - there are one million schools in India serving our children today! Unfortunately, there are complex issues that continue to hamper India’s ability to deliver relevant, quality education at scale, perpetuating a chain of inter-generational poverty, that prevents young people from becoming productive and effective contributing members of our developing economy. Enter Shikshagraha, led by Khushboo Awasthi and Santosh More, supported by a superb team of educators and change makers. Shikshagraha is a movement to bring together the many diverse stakeholders who influence public education - government bodies, civil society, academia, industry and media - to achieve education equity. They are focussed on: - improving schools - restoring agency - supporting collective efforts - driving decentralised action - leveraging technology use In 2025, they are planning to be in 100 districts across India, working to strengthen school leadership.
