    Around 155,000 freshers in the IT and tech sector are likely to get hired in FY24 compared to 230,000 graduates last fiscal, reports businessline, citing TeamLease Digital. A hiring slowdown and “intensified skills evaluation mechanisms” have become a cause for concern for the 1.5 million engineering graduates currently seeking employment, the report says. With companies looking for a combination of soft and hard skills, the report highlights a skills gap suggesting that only 45% of the applicants meet the required proficiency expectations. To bridge this gap, TeamLease Digital’s Business Head Krishna Vij says that collaborative efforts of the industry, academia, and government can help with building relevant programmes and curricula. Another report by The Economic Times suggests a decline in the number of students enrolling for courses in engineering and technology. TeamLease Edtech’s President Neeti Sharma says that the enrolment for B. Tech courses dropped to 3.6 million in 2020-21 compared to four million in 2016-17. Freshers hiring by IT companies also declined to 15% and 10% in FY23 and FY24, respectively, compared to 26% in FY22, she adds. The demand for courses like cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cyber security, on the other hand, is still intact, Sharma says.
