The last couple of posts covered how important a writer's role is in the filmmaking process, and how exploitative the film industry can be when writers are unaware of their rights. We also brought to light how difficult it is for writers to get their foot in the door to gain access to the right decision makers. On that note, we're now going to talk about how representation for a writer is crucial for writers to have bargaining power during the negotiation stage, which actually takes place very early on in the filmmaking process. Representation should be a non-negotiable for writers, just as it is for all other lead artists and department heads in a film. Without representation, writers are often carried away by the verbal promises of seeing their story on screen, leaving them open to exploitation. Gone are the days when the word "Talent" was used exclusively for individuals who were facing the camera. Diverse voices bring depth and authenticity to storytelling, making it imperative for writers from all backgrounds to have a seat at the table. Additionally, representation also allows writers to be able to focus on what they do best - write! - while the job of negotiating the value of a writers' contribution is left to people who have a better understanding of the writer's impact on the filmmaking process. Healthy representation aligns a writer with their long term goals, while keeping the short term goals on track to build the writer's brand and credibility. This is especially true in the very often seen scenario where writers do not have access to knowing what industry rates are for the work that they do. A writer's representative comes in essential in this case since they have access to more information and the right kitty of decision makers.
