The Swiss Re Shine team spent last week interacting with the Kunbi community in Joida, Uttara Kannada, understanding their deep connection with indigenous tuber crops and learning about the community’s commendable efforts to preserve these "future food" crops, as well as their aspirations and the challenges in cultivating and marketing them. This was also an opportunity to inform the team of the work Spudnik Farms has been doing with the community to promote tuber crops and brainstorm key intervention areas that could help bring these climate-resilient crops into the mainstream. Last week, as part of SHINE India Program in partnership with Spudnik Farms, our team had the privilege of visiting Joida, a small town in Uttara Kannada. We met many smallholder farmers, their families, and Directors from the Farmers Producers Organization. Through our interactions, we gained a deeper understanding of the real-time challenges they face in growing indigenous vegetables, creating markets for their supplies, and securing fair prices for their produce. We also met a few women from the village who were keen to set up a small unit to manufacture value-added products from such indigenous produce. It was heartwarming to see their enthusiasm and motivation to become self-sufficient and earn a livelihood to support their families. The next couple of days were spent gathering and synthesizing all the information from these interactions and preparing an action plan to help Sumeet and her team to support these marginalized farmers. I am grateful to Swiss Re for providing us with such a platform to contribute meaningfully. Thank you, Swati and Srinivas, for steering us through this.
