"India needs to transition to airshed-level air quality management urgently. Economic and public health gains would be enormous, and it would be a true manifestation of the precautionary principle, a cornerstone of environmental policy." NEW: Collaborative article by experts from 24 Indian institutions, published in Environmental Research Letters (IOP Publishing), explores India’s path to net zero by 2070 through 3 broad dimensions - ‘national and sub-national perspectives’, ‘sectoral and technological transitions’ and ‘enablers’. SFC’s Aditya Valiathan Pillai wrote on climate institutions as a key enabler in the process. He examines how India has performed in building climate institutions, the challenges that lie in building them, and how we can create an effective institutional structure that differs from ones in countries that are past their emissions peak. https://lnkd.in/gtHu3ZQJ

As stubble burning cases rise in North India and exacerbate air pollution, punitive measures like fines and technological interventions often fail, as they do not address the root cause. Bhargav Krishna, Dr Babar Shahbaz and Annanya Mahajan recommend focusing on long-term crop diversification solutions based on their analysis of India and Pakistan’s approaches to the issue. This is part of the report ‘The Air We Share’ by the Council for Strategic and Defense Research and Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI). https://lnkd.in/gPt6szJS
