About us
The alternative protein sector is at the forefront of global food innovation, with major benefits for people, planet, and profit. Making foods that taste the same or better and cost the same or less than their animal-derived counterparts, with vastly lower impacts on planetary health - now that’s *smart protein*. At the Good Food Institute India, we’re laying the groundwork for this sunrise industry, and demonstrating a model for a more secure, sustainable, and just food system in the developing world. GFI India’s team of experts across science and technology, business, and policy works to build the smart protein sector from the ground up in the world's largest democracy. We build pivotal networks, conduct and freely disseminate high-impact research, and provide critical advisory support. By working with governments, entrepreneurs, large food and biotech corporations, philanthropies, universities, and other partners across the food supply, we’re putting sustainable protein on the menu.

💥Exciting News | Systemiq Ltd. released a new report earlier this month in collaboration with The Good Food Institute Europe, spotlighting the economic potential of 🥩 cultivated meat for EU’s economy. 🚀 The analysis projects that the cultivated meat sector could grow to a €170 - €510 billion market globally by 2050. At the EU level, this could potentially represent a whopping €15-€80 billion market. 🌏 Global #CM growth at this scale would mitigate up to 3.5 gigatons of GHG emissions (equivalent to 17% of total 2050 food system emissions). In addition, it could save up to 1.4 billion hectares of agricultural land and up to 225 million cubic metres of water. 👉🏽 Access the report here: https://lnkd.in/gzt8FYUm As the global cultivated meat sector grows from strength to strength, India, too, has the potential to be the next leader in cultivated proteins through increased R&D and scale-up infrastructure, strong regulatory pathways, and continued government support similar to the recent #BioE3 and Karnataka Bio-Technology 2024-2029 policies. 👉🏽 To know more about the Indian cultivated meat ecosystem and key opportunities, read our 3 reports: https://lnkd.in/dxfJE97A Elliot Swartz Faraz Harsini, MSc, PhD, DipACLM Laine Clark Emma Ignaszewski Chandana Tekkatte Radhika Ramesh #CultivatedMeat #AlternativeProteins #Futureoffood

ICYMI: Our new study analyses the nutritional quality of plant-based meat and egg products available in the Indian market 👀 Uncover interesting insights about their protein and fat profiles, and hear from the author, Padma Ishwarya, S., Ph.D., in this Green Queen Media article. 🇮🇳🌱🥩 INDIAN PLANT-BASED MEAT: AS NUTRITIOUS AS ANIMAL PROTEIN, IF NOT MORE In a country where food attitudes are driven as much by health as they are by religion, and four in five citizens are protein-deficient, a new analysis is aiming to reinforce the potential of plant-based meat and eggs to meet India’s consumption needs. Comparing over 100 meat and egg alternatives with their animal-sourced equivalents, researchers found that most vegan products have an equivalent or higher amount of protein. And those that combine two or more sources of plant proteins have a balanced amino acid composition. The study, titled Decoding Smart Protein Nutrition, was conducted by The Good Food Institute (GFI) India, and aims to provide nutritional information to Indians while listing out recommendations for plant-based companies and the government based on its findings. “This analysis underscores the nutritional strengths of plant-based alternatives, particularly in terms of protein and fibre content,” said Padma Ishwarya, S., Ph.D., science and technology specialist at GFI India, and the report’s author. “By offering consumers healthier, sustainable options, we can chart a path toward nutrition security and a more resilient food system.” Plant-based products also outperformed conventional meat and eggs in fibre. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India considers foods with at least 3g of fibre as a source of the nutrient, with products containing over 6g classed as high-fibre foods.
