In a touching story of compassion, a newborn baby girl was rescued and adopted in Ghaziabad on Saturday, 12 October 2024. Her faint cries from the bushes caught the attention of nearby residents, who quickly alerted the authorities. The police, led by Sub-Inspector Pushpendra Singh from the Dudhiya Peepal outpost, immediately rescued the newborn and rushed her to the nearest hospital for urgent care. Despite their best efforts, no family came forward to claim the child. Moved by the baby's vulnerability and the circumstances surrounding her abandonment, Sub-Inspector Singh and his wife, Rashi, unhesitatingly decided to adopt her. Married since 2018 and yearning for a child of their own, the couple saw the baby's arrival during the Navratri festival as a divine gift. With hearts filled with love and compassion, the Singhs began the legal process to welcome the newborn into their family. Now, the little one is safe and surrounded by love in the Singh household. This beautiful act of kindness has warmed the hearts of many, serving as a reminder of the power of compassion. #Ghaziabad #Compassion #Rescue #Newborn #Navratri #Humanity #Adoption #PushpendraSingh [Ghaziabad, Adoption, Sub-Inspector Pushpendra Singh, Baby Girl, Sub-Inspector Pushpendra Singh, Navratri, compassion]

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will celebrate Kukur Tihar, a festival that honours dogs, on 17 October, 2024. This Nepalese tradition recognises the important role dogs play in our ecosystem. In partnership with Residents' Welfare Associations and animal caretakers, BBMP will host events under the theme '#BITEFREELOCALITY' to promote peaceful coexistence between humans and dogs and address stray dog concerns. One of the key initiatives is a pilot feeding programme that will train Pourakarmikas (sanitation workers) in four wards to assist in feeding community dogs. By coordinating with local restaurants, the BBMP hopes to ensure that these animals have access to regular nutrition, reducing the likelihood of aggressive behaviour due to hunger. BBMP Commissioner Vikas Suralkar emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, "Better waste management has reduced food sources for stray dogs, leading to hunger and sometimes aggression. This initiative will help prevent that, and also make it easier to vaccinate and neuter the dogs once they get close to the sanitation workers." As Bengaluru sets a positive example, should this tradition be adopted across the country to promote animal welfare? #KukurTihar #Bengaluru #DogFestival #AnimalWelfare #StrayDogs #AnimalRights [Kukur Tihar, Bengaluru, dog festival, animal welfare, BBMP]

India has achieved a monumental milestone in public health by eradicating trachoma, a contagious bacterial infection that was once a leading cause of blindness in the country. The World Health Organisation (WHO) officially declared India trachoma-free, recognising the nation's unwavering commitment to public health and community support. Trachoma, caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium, spreads through close contact, shared personal items, and respiratory droplets. Symptoms include blurry vision, red and swollen eyes, and potential vision loss. Poor hygiene, overcrowding, and inadequate sanitation facilitated its spread. Under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI), India adopted the WHO-recommended SAFE strategy — Surgery for trichiasis, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental improvement. Through targeted interventions, including surgical treatment, antibiotic distribution, hygiene promotion, and improved access to water and sanitation, India successfully reduced trachoma prevalence from a staggering 50% in the 1950s to a mere 0.008% in 2018. India maintained its vigilance even after initial eradication, conducting rigorous surveillance from 2019 to 2024 to prevent the disease from re-emerging. #Trachoma #India #PublicHealth #GlobalHealth #India #WHO #EyeHealth [trachoma, public health, WHO, Chlamydia trachomatis, blindness prevention]

For S Shanmugavel, success meant returning to his roots! A former soil scientist, he left his prestigious job at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University to follow his passion for organic farming. For decades, his family cultivated moringa for drumsticks, but low market rates made it unsustainable. “I learnt that the excessive supply of drumsticks resulted in low market rates, whereas its leaves were in much higher demand in the international market. So, I decided to switch to moringa leaves farming,” says Shanmugavel. Using his experience in soil science and agricultural chemistry, he transformed the family farm by implementing sustainable practices like zero-budget natural farming, bundle mulching, and drip irrigation. Today, he earns up to Rs 40,000 a month, and his moringa products — powder, oil, and capsules — are sold across the USA, Canada, Europe, and Gulf countries. "I wanted to give something back to my roots and to farming," he says, proving that true success comes from following your passion and staying connected to where you began.
