*An SOS Appeal From The Citizen* Dear readers, The Citizen, after 10 years of fearlessly reporting news and publishing expert opinions, without any political or corporate patronage, is looking at closing down. We will have no option but to shut The Citizen down, as we no longer have the funds to keep it afloat. It has been a major struggle financially to keep the globally read and respected, digital newspaper alive. However, there is one ray of hope. That is you, our readers. This is our final SOS fundraising appeal to you. The Citizen needs Rs One Crore a year to continue bringing you independent and honest coverage. It will just take around 5000 people to subscribe, or donate a few thousands each. The Citizen has stayed away from accepting any funds or donations from politicians, political parties or business houses. All our articles are free to read and we never had paywalls. The Citizen started in 2014 and stood upright through a tumultuous and rough ten years. We made our mark through solid stories, informed content, and points of view that brought out the truth, rejected the lies, in a manner that never crossed journalistic tenets. It is tough to announce an imminent closure, particularly as we were literally on our own. While the pressure remained we were able to cut through with our reportage steadfast, honest and courageous. We appeal to you to circulate this SOS message among those who care to keep news independent, those who believe in democratic values and those who support independent media.
