#ProjectAnnouncement WRI India is collaborating with the CII - Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), World Green Building Council (WGBC), WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and World Resources Institute on a new initiative "All in for a Net Zero Built Environment" funded by the We Mean Business Coalition. The initiative will also be working in Mexico led by our colleagues in World Resources Institute México and supported by the Mexico Green Building Council (SUMe Sustentabilidad para México). In India, WRI India is working with Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation and Nashik Municipal Corporation to develop Net Zero Carbon and Resilient Buildings (NZCRB) city action plans. For Thiruvananthapuram, this first of its kind effort will establish a building sector baseline, identify transformative actions, and develop an implementation framework for decarbonizing the city’s building stock, in-line with the state’s ambitious goals on carbon neutrality. In Nashik, WRI India will build on the building sector recommendations outlined in the Nashik Climate Action Plan, launched last month. The initiative will also identify pilot projects to build evidence on decarbonization strategies being adoptable and scalable. At the national level, WRI India and partners will convene around national building decarbonization strategies and their implementation at the state and city levels. Municipal solid waste burning contributes significantly to air pollution, releasing harmful particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM 10), carbon monoxide and other non-methane, volatile organic compounds (NMVOC). It is of utmost importance that municipal corporations take proactive steps to eliminate it by raising awareness on the health implications of waste burning. Sree Kumar Kumaraswamy, Bhavay Sharma and Madhav Pai look at combating open waste burning by citing the need for waste segregation at source, decentralization of waste management, addressing behavioural issues and engaging with individuals, ward members and resident welfare associations (RWAs) to strengthen awareness among others. 🎥 New video: Enhancing resource efficiency for MSMEs MSMEs are the backbone of India’s economy, making significant contributions to the nation’s GDP and overall economic growth. However, climate change and evolving market trends pose significant challenges, especially for those reliant on fossil fuels. Our latest video explores cases of large industrial areas in Gujarat, observing how centralized boilers deployed across MSME clusters can help improve resource efficiency – a model that can be implemented anywhere. 💸 By virtue of being a shared resource, these community boilers can reduce fuel costs by 40-45% per kg of steam and lower labor costs by 60% by some estimates. 🏭 Deployed across clusters, they also increase production efficiency, leading to enhanced output. 🌱 The efficiency of centralized boilers also has an environmental impact, helping reduce emissions and contributing to GHG reduction targets. 🤝 Collaboration with industry, government and allied stakeholders is key to scaling this initiative and redefining the energy landscape for MSMEs. Watch here to see how Gujarat is leading the way in developing centralized boiler systems, setting a precedent for industrial clusters across India. #MSMEs #SustainableGrowth Kajol . | Deepak Krishnan | T S Gowthami | Abhishek Bhardwaj | Niharika Tagotra (Dr.) (PhD) | Ashim Roy | Bharath Jairaj.

WRI India hosted a roundtable on ‘Green Hydrogen Growth: Sub-National Dialogue on Catalyzing Change for Addressing Growth Hurdles’ at the 10th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2024 organized by India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA). Nearly 40 stakeholders from states, industry, and financial institutions participated. They discussed key policy measures, incentives, and infrastructure support needed to accelerate green hydrogen growth in India. State representatives shared their initiatives, while industry experts highlighted challenges in project development and incentives. The discussion also focused on the role of state authorities in supporting R&D, export-focused projects, financing options, mitigating financial risks, and fostering innovation. Some of the key takeaways from the session include: ➡ Emphasis on the need for a comprehensive regulatory framework to support green hydrogen growth ➡The importance of carbon market pricing bridging the gap between grey and green hydrogen ➡Early project investments should be seen as valuable learning opportunities. ➡Increasing the feasibility of green hydrogen by identifying niche/specific applications (and locations) for the green hydrogen industry. ➡Strengthening the discourse between relevant stakeholders to develop standards, certification processes, and regulations that ensure the safety of hydrogen applications, particularly for hydrogen blending into natural gas pipeline. #greenhydrogen #hydrogensummit Dipesh Pherwani | Anuraag Nallapaneni | Yashaswini Jain | Pawan Mulukutla | Madhav Pai | Utsav Shah | Anindita Bhattacharjee | Dr. Garima Dwivedi (nee Mishra) | Debi Prasad Dash | Dr. Rahul Walawalkar | Ankita Saxena | India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) | Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) | Sachin Kumar | Ravi Verma | Kiran Kumar Alla | Pragya Gupta | Ankur Malyan | Satyasheel Bhardwaj | Dr. Bhaskar Jha | Mudit Jain | Ranjit Gupta | Surbhi Goyal | P R Reddy | Aniruddha Kadvekar | K Premkumar

🌏The regional conference of the NDC Transport Initiative for Asia (NDC TIA) ‘Low-Carbon Prosperity in Progress: Transforming Transport in Asia’ was held in Bangkok last week. The conference convened government representatives, practitioners, and civil society to discuss the way forward for decarbonizing the transport sector. WRI India was represented by Aparna Vijaykumar and Parveen Kumar, PhD. While Aparna spoke about improving access to climate finance for low-carbon transport, Parveen participated in two panels, focusing on India's resilient supply chain for future battery production and minimizing the use of non-renewable energy sources in the transportation sector. Global climate finance reached USD 1.3 trillion in 2021-22, of which the transport sector received 29%, with most of the funding directed towards road infrastructure. Aparna highlighted that one of the major barriers in climate finance is the lack of economic appraisals that incorporate sustainability criteria, allowing for assessments based on credit history. Parveen spoke how circularity within the lithium-ion battery ecosystem could significantly reduce global mining demand by 2040 and achieve a 17% reduction in the life cycle emissions of batteries. He also emphasized India's efforts to boost domestic EV manufacturing, through government Production-Linked Incentive schemes, and the focus on establishing platforms like e-FAST (Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport) that supports both multi-stakeholder collaboration and research. #TransportinNDCs #ForumforDecarbonisingTransport #ClimateFinance #SustainableTransport #NDCTIA #eFAST World Resources Institute | Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH | ITF - International Transport Forum | The International Council on Clean Transportation | Agora Verkehrswende | SLOCAT Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport | REN21 | International Climate Initiative | Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action | Urda Eichhorst
