The Supreme Court of India has amended its terminology from "summer vacation" to "partial court working days" in its updated rules, effective from May 2025. The change, made during Chief Justice DY Chandrachud's final working week, limits annual court holidays to ninety-five days (excluding Sundays), down from 103. The court will now observe "partial court working days" from May 26 to July 14. Additionally, "Vacation Judge" has been renamed as "Judge." Amid criticisms regarding court vacations, CJI Chandrachud has proposed flexible scheduling as an alternative to collective breaks, underscoring that judges use this time to finalize pending judgments. The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear Facebook v. Amalgamated Bank, a case that stems from the 2015 Cambridge Analytica data breach. At issue is whether Facebook (now Meta) misled investors by disclosing hypothetical data breach risks without revealing that it already knew about the Cambridge breach. A ruling in Facebook's favor could limit private investors' ability to sue companies for securities fraud over misleading risk disclosures. The case has drawn significant attention, with both the government and prominent securities law scholars supporting the investors’ claims. The Supreme Court recently ruled that an employee did not qualify as a "workman" under Section 2(s) of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, as amended in 2010. This decision was based on the employee’s supervisory role and wages exceeding Rs. 1,600 per month (now Rs. 10,000 as per the 2010 amendment). Since the employee’s tenure predated the amendment, the Court applied the provision in effect at that time, thus excluding him from the "workman" definition. The ruling clarifies that supervisory capacity and salary thresholds are crucial factors in determining an employee's eligibility under this section. The Supreme Court overturned a High Court decision that used the date of birth on an Aadhaar card to determine a motor accident victim's age for compensation calculation. Justices Sanjay Karol and Ujjal Bhuyan emphasized that a school leaving certificate, recognized under Section 94 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, should be the authoritative proof of age, not the Aadhaar card. The Court ordered Rs.15,00,000 in compensation for the appellant, using a multiplier of 14 based on the age listed in the school certificate, thus restoring the Motor Accidents Claim Tribunal’s original assessment.
