About us
Welcome! We are Xpheno (pronounced ‘ex-feeno’), a Specialist Talent Solutions company that offers Direct Hire, RPO, IT Staff Augmentation, Executive Search, Engineering Professional Services & Sales/Support Staffing services. Founders Kamal Karanth and Anil Kumar ET, who have served in marquee staffing companies as Managing Directors in their previous stints, have come together with a seasoned, like-minded team, to lead Xpheno. Xpheno the name, is short for extended phenotype. It is derived from the concept of genes and their effect on the environment. We believe that this concept lends itself to the world of human resources perfectly because when placed in a role that best suits their abilities, people are able to influence large teams and companies. Thereby, having a huge, positive impact on the Eco-system and very often on the way we live. At Xpheno, we understand that organisations need to get talent at the right speed, scale, quality, and at the right costs, or what we call SSQC. However, at the foundation of this are people, and the relationships we build with them. It’s the conversations we have, and the bonds we form that are critical for aspirants to make a decision. Our team’s industry expertise in Life Sciences, Consumer & Retail, Automotive, Construction, Infrastructure and IT enables us to find the right people, for the right role and thereby ensuring that we fulfill our promise every time.

How scalable or practical is this flat organisation concept we keep floating around? Every time an organisation is stressed and wants to 'reorg,' managerial roles are scrutinized. It’s time to ask which managerial layer is the most important in any organisation: the leaders who report to the CEO or the managers managing the individual contributors. According to investment bank Morgan Stanley, Amazon may soon eliminate nearly 14,000 manager roles from its 1.5-plus million workforce. Should we wonder whether this will free up the likely 150,000-odd people who reported to the laid-off managers or burden those new managers to whom these manager-less Freebirds will report now? The book Trillion Dollar Coach narrates how Google tried a professor-student structure in 2001. However, the engineers on the floor wanted a manager from whom they could learn or get help making decisions. Eventually, they brought back the managerial structure a year later. I found 13 million managers with 5 plus years of experience on a LinkedIn search, including 1.5 million in India. Unlike at the bottom of the pyramid, where the churn is above 30% across sectors, only 10% of these managers in India switched jobs in the last 12 months, thereby providing institutional knowledge continuity. Much of these managers’ time goes into recruiting and training fresh graduates. Moreover, the higher attrition at the entry-level means lowered productivity for the managers and, likely, higher stress levels. Is a manager a crucial conduit for the churn and retraining most organisations have at the entry-level? What does a manager do that we keep hiring new ones or keep promoting more of them? According to the Yankees’ famous coach from the 1960s, Casey Stengel, a good manager, keeps the people who hate us away from those who are undecided! 😎 My column in today's Business Line!
