𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝘂𝗿𝘂? Sadhguru tells us that only one who is seeking liberation should seek a Guru. If one is seeking solace, there is no need to seek a Guru. Sadhguru then tells us how one experiences a Guru's presence. 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿: For spiritual life, whether one has to search for a Sadhguru or it happens? 𝗦𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗴𝘂𝗿𝘂: Where will you search and how will you know who is Sadhguru and who is not Sadhguru? You have no way to judge, isn't it? So, how do I seek something? You just seek. You simply seek, ‘I want to know.’ The more you become ‘I do not know’ the deeper your seeking is, isn't it? Seeking does not mean seeking something. Seeking means seeking that which you do not know. If you have to seek, you should not make any assumptions. Isn't it so? You already made an assumption, ‘God is sitting up in the heaven, I am seeking him’ this is not seeking, this is just hallucination. Seeking means simply seeking. Seeking is possible only when a deep ‘I do not know’ has happened within you. If a vacuum of ‘I do not know’ happens within you, Sadhguru will happen to you, you don’t have to search because you don’t know how to search. If you search with your intellect, naturally you will search for that kind of person with whom you’re most comfortable, isn't it? 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂 Sadhguru looks at how we build a mountain of karma around us, and what we need to do to dismantle this. 𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: Shankaran Pillai boarded a local bus. Suddenly, he covered his face with a shawl and doubled up. A puzzled co-passenger asked him, “Sir, are you all right?” Shankaran Pillai assured him that he was all right, and said, “It’s just that if I see that old lady there, I would have to offer her my seat. I’m crouching to avoid seeing her.” Shankaran Pillai’s choice was either to stand and offer his seat, or continue sitting. But most people try to avoid involvement of various kinds, never realising that avoidance is big karma. The moment you try to shun involvement, karma multiplies. And the calculation – “Should I give up my seat or not” – is an even bigger karma. How does one escape this entanglement-avoidance trap? This question confuses many. In a state of confusion, everything around you sticks to you! It is like you are covered by a super-glue coating, and every speck of dust adheres. Acquiring karma has nothing to do with performing good or bad deeds. You simply build karma within yourself with confused intentions and limited desires. After some time, you have such a mountain of karma around you that it becomes difficult to breathe. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗠𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗗𝗼 𝗜 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 ? When to sleep and how long to sleep are questions that most people have battled with at some point in their life. Sadhguru explains to us the difference between sleep and relaxation and that it is not the quantity, but the quality of sleep that is important. He also tells us how the practice of yoga can help reduce a person's Resting Heart Rate. 𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: The fact that you sleep at night makes some difference between your mornings and evenings. Your mornings would be just as bad if you did not rest well at night. So what is making the difference is not sleep, but the level of relaxation. A good morning is a good beginning, but you slowly lose your cool as the day progresses and you get stressed. It must be understood that the stress is not because of your work. Everybody thinks their job is stressful, but no job really is. It is your inability to handle your own systems that makes you stressful. How do you keep your system free of stress, so that you are at the same level of relaxation and enthusiasm, morning or evening? In medical terms, if you take my pulse after I have had a good lunch, it would be somewhere around 47 to 48 or near that range. If you take my pulse on an empty stomach, it would be in the range of 35 to 40. Physiologically, this implies that I’m in a state of deep sleep. I am awake enough to do any type of activity in the world, but my body is in deep sleep. So when you are constantly sleeping, there is no question of stress. When there’s no stress, why would you be any different at 4 A.M than at 9 P.M? 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: Sadhguru, when you say that everything in existence is just energy, does the realm of the personal – all its love, its poetry, its lunacy, its rage, its beauty – mean nothing at all, ultimately? Is there no connection between the psychological and the existential? 𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: If someone is really very dearly attached to all the things around us, I do not want to destroy that. If you love your life so much, why should I take it away? I do not want to take it away. But unfortunately, death will. I am not death, I am just a reminder. I am just reminding you that anyway, it is going to happen. It is better to be aware that it is going to happen. What were all these things that you were talking about? Your love, your… 𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: Its love, its poetry, its lunacy... 𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: Oh, particularly lunacy! Love – if I talk about it, I will become unpopular. Poetry – maybe that is okay because not many people read poetry. Lunacy – I cannot touch that because that is a universal phenomenon. So what is there left for me? Is there anything more? 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝟐𝟏 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲? 𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: What is peace? People say that sitting on the mountain and meditating is peace. Somebody else may drink alcohol and become very peaceful and so on. Whenever your ego is satisfied, you are very peaceful. Wherever you go, in that place, if people are willing to support and boost your ego, in that place you are very peaceful. Only in those places where your ego takes a thrashing, that is where you are not peaceful, isn't it? If you have to go and sit on a mountain to be peaceful, that peace is not yours, maybe it is the mountain. When you come down you will have the same problems again. Any fool can be peaceful on the mountain because you are there only for three days. If you live there for three years, you will have problems there too. Vacations are generally very short – which is a good thing. If you stay there a little longer, you will realize even that does not work. Because it is very brief, before you can create new problems you are back in your old problems. So people shouldn’t complain about the shortness of their vacation. Generally in the world, when people talk about peace of mind, it is only about somehow making their ego comfortable. Instead of being in a disturbed state, they wish to be comfortable. But the very process of trying to make your ego comfortable is the whole process of discomfort also. The more a person tries to be peaceful, he only loses his peace and goes off track. A person who is trying to be peaceful will never actually be peaceful. Just the reverse of this process will happen. How can we as parents protect our children from the negative effects of social media? 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: If you want your children to grow up without social media, you could send them to us by the time they are six years of age. We are bringing up children with a different sense of life and great enthusiasm for life without being involved in those kinds of things. But, social media need not be all negative – it can be a tremendous technology and possibility to reach a maximum number of people. I myself am on social media, but not because I am seeking any response or approval. I say what I have to say, whether someone approves of it or not. I say what I see as true, regardless of the consequences. This is the position that I have taken: shedding light on everything is more important in the long term than pleasing everyone. When you say what you see as true, it may not be immediately appreciated, but maybe it will be in five, ten, or a hundred years. Historically, most human beings who were of a certain profoundness were only recognized long after their death. That is how the world has been until recently. Today, because of social media, there is a certain level of acceptance while you are still alive. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱? Sadhguru: When you look at the way you live your life, you will notice that you are ruled by compulsive emotions. Let us say today happens to be your wife’s birthday or your husband’s special occasion. You really want to make sure nothing goes wrong – but that is the day anger comes up in you, for no reason. It happened once. Early one morning, Shankaran Pillai was walking on the street in the neighborhood, loudly cursing, “Let the devil take over your life! Let worms come out of your mouth!” Like this, he went on and on. One of his neighbors stopped him and asked, “Whom are you cursing like this early in the morning?” He said, “It does not matter whom. Sooner or later, someone is bound to come by.” It is not about anyone or anything. It is a compulsive emotion that is coming out. Whoever is around you becomes the victim. 𝗔 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? People try to control their emotions their whole life, but nothing changes. The way the mind functions is just the way your karmic substance is. It depends on what kind of accumulation you have. To go beyond the compulsiveness that a certain type of accumulation creates within you, either you have to rise to a different level of awareness, or you have to transform your energies. 𝗦𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗴𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗨𝗻𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 Sadhguru: Here, sitting on the banks of river Salzach, in Salzburg. Well, I have some company here from the past. At one time, I spent so much time just simply staring at the water, and its endless number of forms that it takes. In all these forms that it takes, and even in still water, like a glass of water, I always noticed that maybe today, I'm calling them molecules, but I always saw the water particles changing shape and form, and taking on many different dynamics, which people thought was crazy. But here, at Salzburg, I have some company. There was Viktor Schauberger in early 20th century, who spent a lot of time watching many aspects of nature, in that, water being one important aspect. And he spoke about it elaborately, out of which many designs were made as to how water behaves when it's moving. For a superficial observer it's just moving - that's all. If you pay enough attention, well... we are doing what's called as Samyama, which is absolute attention. If you pay that kind of attention, not only the form and energy that the water exudes, the aliveness of the water, and the molecular dynamics of the water which is continuously changing, depending upon which the water behaves differently in different lives, differently in different human beings, how you treat it - 72% of your body being water. How you treat it, how you perceive it, is extremely important. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗪𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 Sadhguru answers a question on how we can figure out which direction we should invest our time and energies in life. 𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: What should I consider before taking big decisions in life? 𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: Essentially, what you are asking is what you should invest your life in. Do not think in terms of what job to take or what education to do. The important thing is this life. For everyone, their life is precious. Into what do you want to invest this precious life? If you look at it this way, you will find something truly worthwhile to do. If you think in terms of how to earn a living and how to get something, you will do something silly that you will regret for the rest of your life. Most people are a regret, which is why they are going around joylessly – they are not doing what they want to do. Instead of creating what really matters to them, they are doing something for a living. Every creature, worm, insect, bird and animal is earning their living. Earning a living is not a big deal for a human being. Unfortunately, because of ten to twenty generations of poverty in this country, people have gotten into this mode. Parents are constantly grilling their children about how they will earn their living. When an earthworm can earn its living, is earning a living an issue for a human being with such a big brain?
