On August 5th, the CII Centre for Women Leadership hosted a pivotal Roundtable discussing the "State of AI: Opportunity or Challenges to Gender Equity." The event featured distinguished speakers who shared invaluable insights on advancing gender equity in the realm of AI. Mr. David Moyer, Education and Cultural Affairs Counselor at the U.S. Embassy, highlighted the current statistic that only 1 in 3 students from India to the US are women and emphasized the need for equal representation to tackle global challenges effectively. Ms Mercedes Soria, MS, MBA, PMP, Vice President of Software Engineering and Chief Intelligence Officer at Knightscope Inc., stressed that while numerous programs exist for women, the real challenge lies in women's self-advocacy. She shared her journey of pushing for promotions and underscored the importance of grit and perseverance in achieving career goals. Ms Seema Arora, Deputy Director General at Confederation of Indian Industry, pointed out that 18.6% of researchers in India are women and are involved in R&D activities. She highlighted that a strong foundation in STEM is no longer just an advantage but a fundamental requirement for sustainable growth and societal well-being. She further shared the progress made in India and shared that the number of female graduates has increased from 38.4% in 2014-15 to 42.6% in 2021-22, indicating positive progress. The importance of fostering gender equity in AI was evident in the discussions, emphasizing that equal representation is essential. Building Inclusive India: A series of Good Practices from the Construction industry We are launching a communication series around Good Practices from construction companies in an effort to ensure inclusion of women across all spheres and verticals of the world of construction in India. Women bring unique perspectives, problem-solving approaches and leadership styles that augment the overall efficiency of the construction industry. By bridging the gender gap, the industry can access a broader pool of skilled professionals, addressing the persistent labour shortages and contributing to the sector's overall gender and ability-focused advancement. Through this series of Good Practices on Inclusion within the Construction companies, we will be bringing forward successful practices on inclusion; along with trailblazers of construction industry talking about special program and practices they have launched to promote inclusion of women. The first part of this series talks about the Recruitment practices to drive Inclusion of Women. The recruitment of women in the Indian construction industry is not merely a matter of gender equality; it is an economic imperative and a catalyst for industry growth. While positive strides have been taken, addressing the existing challenges is pivotal to unleashing the full potential of female talent, fostering a thriving and equitable construction sector for the future. Initiatives focused on breaking gender barriers, ensuring safety, and implementing supportive policies are essential steps towards realizing a more inclusive and robust construction industry in India.
