3 Questions that Companies and Consultants to Note, based on McKinsey’s case for 'Sustainable Procurement'.   1.   How is Sustainable Procurement an opportunity for smaller companies? Align & Qualify! Larger companies have already started to require their suppliers to align to their own sustainability practices and reporting requirements. Small companies grow big by supplying large companies and becoming part of their Vendor Development Programs. The goal is to emerge as a Tier #1 / preferred supplier.    2.   How to leverage this trend? Start Reporting even if it is not mandatory for you! Suppliers should improve data visibility of their own ESG footprint. If the data feeds the need for better reporting at the larger company (read the McKinsey report), then there is a good chance for the supplier to grow into a Tier 1 supplier.   3.   Which reporting framework to follow? Pick the reporting regime that applies to the supplier. Current choices are: ESRS in Europe, BRSR in India and IFRS-Sustainability everywhere.   Since it is not mandatory for the smaller companies, the supplier can disclose current inability to align and report and take note to improve future ability to report. This achieves two goals:   1.   Become aware 2.   Move towards full alignment and data reporting   The trick though, is to achieve these in quick time which translates to affordable costs. How can a small company invest big in Sustainability Reporting in the hope of the growth? That is not necessary! Consultants should help their clients latch on to this growth opportunity.
