Geoffrey Hinton won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics. His research pioneered the current AI revolution, and he is therefore often regarded as the Father of AI. But he has a warning for all of us. He thinks humans might actually be facing things that are more intelligent than us--- for the first time ever in our history. Listen in to his explanation. And to read more about his research on AI, check out our earlier post. #geofferyhinton #ai #AI #aiwarning #nobelprize2024 #nobelprize #nobelprizeinphysics #physics #synapse #synapseconclave #buzzingnow #originalthinking

Richard Feynman, known as the Great Explainer, co-won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1965. Feynman worked on quantum, and his work corrected errors and inaccuracies of earlier quantum formulations. While a problematic man in his personal and professional life, his first principles included choice phrases like: "Permit us to question -- to doubt -- to not be sure." And "scientific knowledge is a body of statements of varying degrees of certainty -- some most unsure, most nearly sure, but none absolutely certain." Daron Acemoglu is one of the most cited economists of the world. He has dissected, through his work, why and how nations fail. Acemoglu won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics--- along with two others--- for their work on institutions and the role of these institutions in the fates and fortunes of nations. More recently, the MIT professor has written about technological change. And what--- and who--- propels it. In this video, he talks about AI, its workings and why, despite not being an AI pessimist, he would strike a note of caution. #daronacemoglu #nobelprize2024 #nobelprize #nobelprizeeconomics #economics #economist #buzzingnow #synapse #synapseconclave

Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discovery of the microRNA and the role it plays in which genes get activated and which don't. Ambros and Ruvkun discovered the microRNA while working on a roundworm, which, while unassuming, has specialised cell types similar to other multicellular organisms, including humans. This research made it possible to understand the role that microRNAs play in how cells perform certain specialised functions. The duo’s breakthrough was initially met with silence. But it upended certain previous notions and theories about gene regulation. And their research is a seminal step in further understanding the regulation of gene activity, which, if it goes awry, can result in diseases like cancer and diabetes. One half of this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to David Baker, while the other half, jointly, to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper for their breakthrough work on proteins. Baker was given the prize for his success in doing what was once considered almost impossible: building new kinds of proteins, previously unknown, using computerised methods. In a lot of cases, these proteins also have entirely new functions. And they can be used as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials and tiny sensors. Hassabis and Jumper were recognised for predicting protein’s complex structure. Structure determines the function of a protein, but understanding it has been a consistent challenge for researchers. Hassabis and Jumper, using Google Deepmind's AlphaFold2 AI model, made that task seem like a breeze. 'Tis the season of Nobel laureates! This time the coveted prize for physics went to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton, considered pioneering scientists whose work underpins the foundations of modern machine learning. Hopfield invented a network that can save and recreate patterns, and which can act like a human brain in completing incomplete patterns when prompted with related information. Hinton, meanwhile, was awarded the prize for his work on neural networks. He discovered a method that can find properties in data, and built a machine that can essentially recognise characteristic elements in a given data set. Check out more information about their work, detailed on the Nobel Prize site. #nobelprize #nobelprize2024 #nobelprizephysics #nobellaureate #johnhopfield #geofferyhinton #AI #AINobel #nobelprizewinner #nobellaureate #physics #physicsnobel

The next time you swat a fly away, think about this: scientists recently mapped its brain. A first ever feat: no adult organism's brain has been fully mapped before. Several scientists from across the world worked for years to build this 'connectome' - down to each individual neuron and synapse. Over 7,000 sections were imaged and over 21 million photos were taken. And as hard as it is to believe, we have never fully mapped a human brain. This milestone is huge because, as one of the co-leaders of the research said, "if we can truly understand how any brain functions, it’s bound to tell us something about all brains." And the human brain shares many parallels with that of a fruit fly. In neurological terms, this is a big step in the direction of an even bigger leap. Note: Motion added for presentation purposes.
