As we prepare to celebrate 110 years of Technicolor innovation, we’re taking a moment to honour one of the most iconic achievements in our history: MPC's groundbreaking work on the Harry Potter franchise. A decade-long journey of visual mastery culminated in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, where MPC’s work earned a BAFTA for Special Visual Effects and an Academy Award nomination. Their contribution helped bring the wizarding world to life in ways never seen before, cementing their legacy as pioneers of visual effects 🧙♂️⚡️
MPC delivered over 325 complex shots for the final film in the series. Their work included iconic scenes like the final battle between Harry and Voldemort, the destruction of Horcruxes, and the thrilling Room of Requirement sequence.
One of MPC’s standout achievements was Voldemort’s death—an iconic scene that underwent multiple creative iterations before finalising the haunting effect of his body disintegrating into flakes, which float away into the dark skies above Hogwarts.
In The Room of Requirement, MPC extended live-action sets and built a fully CG environment that gave the illusion of endless space, while animating a deadly river of fire, simulated using Flowline software. Magical fire creatures pursued our heroes as they escaped on brooms, blending practical elements with CG enhancements.
MPC also tackled two pivotal Horcrux destruction effects: Neville’s slaying of Nagini, which released a smoky, ominous cloud, and the Diadem Horcrux destruction, where fiery Voldemort heads burst towards the camera as the diadem was consumed by flames.
The aerial duel between Harry and Voldemort showcased MPC’s expertise, merging their faces in combat, animating Voldemort’s cape as it lashed out at Harry, and crafting the macro shot of Voldemort’s wand cracking under the strain of his power. The battle scenes around Hogwarts also featured 6,000 CG Death Eaters, digital giants, and stone knights—all seamlessly integrated into the live-action footage.
MPC’s contributions to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 represent not just the culmination of a film series, but a decade of innovation and craftsmanship in visual effects, leaving an indelible mark on cinematic history.
