Apple Launches iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 1 With New AI Tools, Call Recording And More

Apple has just released the iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 1 update for eligible iPhone models, marking a big leap in bringing artificial intelligence (AI) to its devices. This update, which launched on Monday, introduces several exciting features, including the much-anticipated Apple Intelligence suite that was first shown off at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 on June 10. Designed for developers, this beta version lets them explore these new features before they roll out to everyone.

One of the most exciting additions in iOS 18.1 is the Apple Intelligence suite, which brings a range of AI-powered tools to iPhones, iPads, and Macs. For instance, there's a new AI writing assistant that can proofread your documents, check spelling and grammar, and even rewrite text in various tones like Concise, Friendly, or Professional. It also offers a summarization feature to pull out key points from your documents, making it easier to digest large amounts of information- a highlight from the WWDC 2024 demo now available for testing.

Siri, Apple's voice assistant, has also gotten a significant upgrade. With iOS 18.1, Siri now has contextual awareness, meaning it can understand and respond to your queries more naturally, even if you don’t use the exact phrasing. The Siri interface now has a cool glowing edge effect, making interactions more visually engaging. Plus, Siri in Messages now provides smart reply options that analyze incoming texts and suggest relevant responses.

The Photos app has also been revamped with AI features, including automatic movie creation through the new Memory Movie option. This lets you create movies based on your prompts, with the app automatically picking media that fits the theme. You can still tweak the content and audio to your liking. Additionally, the Photos app now supports natural language search, so you can find specific photos by simply describing them in plain language.

Safari is getting smarter too. The latest update enables the browser to summarize web pages when Reader Mode is on, making it easier to quickly grasp the main points of lengthy articles.

Another notable addition is the call recording feature in the Phone app. With iOS 18.1, you can record calls and find them in the Notes app, complete with transcription options. This makes it handy for reviewing conversations or keeping detailed records.

Apple is also staying transparent with the new Apple Intelligence Report in Settings. This feature lets you review and export your AI activity data, all protected by Face ID authentication. The AI features use on-device processing combined with Private Cloud Compute to safeguard your privacy.

For now, the iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 1 update is available only for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which support these advanced AI features thanks to their A17 Pro chipset. Alongside this, similar updates are available for iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1, extending these new AI capabilities to Apple’s broader lineup of devices with Apple Silicon chipsets.
