New AI Wearable ‘Friend’ Unveiled To Cure Loneliness; Internet Asks Why Isn’t It An App?

Seems like the Humane AI Pin debacle didn’t deter the AI industrial complex trying to encash on Homo sapien’s perpetual loneliness. Founder Avi Shiffman unveiled ‘Friend’ , an AI wearable that one can don as a necklace. The $99 gizmo endeavors to stick around its users as their chuddy buddies, listening to their mundane weekdays or exciting weekendings, and gently nudging smart curated texts on their mobile screen, reminding that the ‘Friend’ is there no matter what. The released demo of the AI wearable shows the compassionate AI trickery solacing a trekker, a gamer, and a foodie enjoying a show, among others. Upon gently pressing the device, the pendant reacts contextually to the user and sends relevant text, akin to having a friend mumble in your ears. Friend leverages the prowess of Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 LLM. The device packs 15 hours of battery power. Speaking with the Wired, Shiffman quips that the device is “more vibe-based than productivity-based.’

Earlier in May, Schiffman revealed that he will be launching `the most original consumer product in recent memory’ on World Friendship Day! Last year, the lad tweeted that the end UX of a personal computer is to be a Friend! The AI app is available only on iOs devices and has no recovery plans if the gadget goes berserk or lost.

For those living under the rock, Avi Shiffman developed a covid tracker website when he was a 17-year-old high school lad.

Meanwhile, Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 slayer Marques Brownlee aka MKBHD, jibed “Wait this isn’t a skit?” The Friend’s founder replied that he will ship one and look forward to a positive review. Marques responded that he will give it a fair shot and “cannot guarantee anything else!”

The internet has been fairly divided over the usability and relevancy of the AI pendant. “Why isn't it an app?” asked a user. Another user claimed that “no one is going to buy this.” “Created by someone with no real friends,” ranted another. Yet another user dubbed the device as ‘Dystopian junk.’
